Preparing for TB change and have crank bolt loose. After changing the belt and tensioner etc can the crank bolt be tightened without having to buy the special crank holding tool? Any help would be appreciated. Cheers
 
Have someone stand on the brakes while in gear, torque it up, paint a dot to set positions
And the use tool number one on spanner to tighten 90 degrees further iirc. ( double check the torque and degrees)

Or you can buy a tool for 70 notes, or make one have a search on here to see photos of how to do it.

A standard sized male airline connector, will screw into the timing hole -

run a M8 tap through the middle of it, then grind a rounded end on a bolt, screw the bolt into the air fitting and the whole thing into the timing slot ...

this locks the flywheel on both autos and manuals for doing the belt, and for tightening the pulley :D

So if if I have the flywheel locking pin in place I am ok to torque up. Will this break under the pressure?
Will the put in gear with brakes on work for my auto ( sorry should have said it was auto on initial post).

I think the pin will break. Putting an auto in gear will not help at all.

Looks like I have no choice but to source to tool. I dont weld so cant make one.
Can you point me to where I can buy the crank locking tool online. I can get the locking pins pretty cheap on fleabay but the crank locking tool gets pricey in Australian $

Where in oz are you ? Would be very easy to a blacksmith to knock one up for you if you got the measuremnts. They are kicking about on the defender forum.

Near Bunbury Western Australia. I'll take your advice and try taking a look at the Defender forum and also to get the measurements, see if someone local can make one up for me.
 
The TDC alignment slot in the flywheel is not normally used for undoing/doing up the crankshaft bolt as it is about 5mm.

However if you keep turning the flywheel around about a quarter of a turn past TDC or the first timing groove,there is another slot that is about 6.5mm -7mm (from memory) that is said can be used to lock the flywheel for tightening up the bolt - which is 80nm + 90 degrees.

Tool needs to be 450mm long, 5mm thick, with 4*8mm bolts mounted on a 75mmPCD at 90 degrees to each other. Centre hole is a minimum of 35mm Dia. Normally about 60mm dia. OD nominally 90mm

Crank bolt needs 27mm socket. Pulley dished section is 118mm x 50mm deep.

Ah i was in perth working last week.

Plenty engineering shops round perth that should be able to knock one of them out quickly for you.

Iirc it was saintv8 . Ill go search.
