Hi, on a 90 (1989 - Diesel 2.5 Turbo), should there be a bush where the tie rod is "attached" to the centre of the front axle - or does it just float. Can't find any pictures on the web and it's not clear in the Haynes Manual. Thanks.

The track rod is the bar that runs behind the front axel attached by two balljoints on the rear of each hub this does not have bushes. The tie rod/panhard rod, the bar that goes from the drivers side just below the steering box accross (slightly in front of the front axel) to a bracket located near to the passenger side spring (nearer the passenger side) which has bushes at each end that should have no play in them at all.

It is the track rod that I meant. What confused me is that the rod passes between 2 (for want of a better term) "plates" at the back of the axle. I wasn't sure if there should be a bush here to connect the rod to the axle.

I know what your thinking of , the channel section thats bolted to the diff . Its there to help reduce the track rod from bending . There is No bushes in it , as long as the track rod isnt rubbing hard on it dont worry about it :) .

Thanks for putting my mind at rest, Sypher. It's my first Land Rover so I'm full of stupid questions. Nice to have somewhere to go to speak to people who know what they're talking about. I'm sure I'll be back before long......
