Struggling to diagnose a troubling ticking sound on my 200tdi with only about 6,500 miles on it. Gone through some usual suspects like tapets and fuel lift pump. Now I’m focused on the vacuum pump given comments by others here as a possibility.
I opened the vacuum pump and the blades are in good order. I tried to remove the whole unit but it seems to be adhered to the drive linkage down in the block because it came out with the pump. So I couldn’t check the stem of the pump.
Another possible reason the pump may be causing the ticking is a leak in the hose or at the servo. So after all of that, here is the question:
If I were to disconnect the hose at the pump and plug the opening on the pump, and the tapping noise stops, wouldn’t that indicate a leak in the hose or further up the system? Also not sure if such a procedure would damage the pump.
Your omniscient advice is greatly appreciated!
