Just took my wifes Freelander (2004) td4 for a drive and I can hear a quite ticking noise comming from the gearbox area going forward.

Sounds like a bycicle wheel with a card in the spokes and increases with speed?

Looking at going to Wales from Kent this weekend in the car, but this is slightly concerning.

Any idears and is it worth the risk ?

Well,

Just went out again in it, as a friend put some microphones on various parts of the car.

One on the IRD, one on gearbox and one on the rear dif.

The noise is definitely coming from the Gearbox. So is this a common problem as it looks like a gearbox issue.

Did the 'tipex' thing on the vcu/driveshafts and it they all moved differently so its not seized. Also the vcu is cold after a long drive.

Will probably take the other car as I don't want to be stranded?

So probably a recon gearbox, unless anyone knows of a issue which could cause the reoccurring ticking noise?
 
Manual or auto box?
For testing purposes, tippex is worthless. The VCU has to turn or the wheels will skip. It simply can't seize without something going bang. The one wheel up test is about the best test you can do at home with minimal equipment.
Ticking near the gearbox could be the inner CV joint or even the splined link to the nearside drive shaft.

I have not done the 'one wheel up test' as only discovered this today and going away tomorrow.

Will have to have a closer look when I get back, but will check the inner CV joint and splined link to the nearside drive shaft.
 
When you get back from the trip in your other car ;) do the one wheel up test.
Also does the tick noise change with road speed or engine speed?

Like being on the LZ forum for 4 years and knowing how to test the VCU - erm not. Amazing that people still do not get the message, a little bit of inquisitiveness hopefully makes for pleasurable ownership rather than a costly nightmare. I blame it on the TD4 - too many limping, misfiring, smokey starting threads to find the real important ones. Or maybe all the VCU testing threads just end in warfare so people just ignore them.
 
Haven't looked into the Freelander FB group for months, don't follow them and don't miss it at all. LZ fulfills my online Freelander needs :)

I have joined a couple of small FB groups. A very social group with 'tenuous' Land Rover links that's a bit of a laugh - the fella that started it wondered whether 40 litres of paint thinner on a bomb fire would make a bang or boom - and ended up with 45% burns - that really happened! Plus a local LR group, if you like looking at pictures of Landies out in the middle of nowhere, this isn't a bad album, its down towards the bottom of the South Island here in NZ...

Brought the freelander 6 months ago and the vuc was ok, but recently put a full set of new tyres on it which may have caused a problem.

Rear dif was changed 2 years ago, according to a invoice !
 
Check the tyres - there was a tread on here a while back where a guy bought 4 'identical' tyres (from a major brand) but realised something was wrong straight away. When he looked very closely at the tyres they came from different batches. He contacted the manufacturer and they confirmed they were from different molds with different rolling circumference. I believe they swapped 2 of them for him and the car was fine. He noticed immediately and didn't put any miles on the car to cause any damage. Might be worth your while checking that the same thing hasn't happened.

If it has and 1 is wrong, get them to replace 2 and put them on the back. Similarly with 2, replace the 2 putting them on the back. For a very short moment, I actually wondered what you should do if 3 were wrong!
