Bugger! My throttle cable snapped this morning. No big deal you might say, and it's not in the grand scheme of things, but it's not even a year old and still looks brand new!

No rust or damage, the eyelet simply snapped off at the pedal end.

I installed it when I did my 200 TDI conversion. It was quite expensive, so I assumed it was a decent brand, but when it turned up, it was in a blue bag :( I was desperate to get on the road, so I used it. I had meant to replace it but I forgot all about it and it's caught up with me.

Just a minor tale of woe for those considering buying britpart.

So that's another thing to add to my emergency supplies, a ball of garden twine or strong string :)

Sh1t happens

Some people have considerably worse days. When I finally got going for work again, I passed some poor guy who had just been knocked off his bike. I did not stop to assist as I don't know any first aid and there were already two cars helping him. The rozzers were just arriving with sirens and lights (in a rather nice range rover).

Send the cable back. They're supposed to have a 3 year warranty now. Cheap ****e that it is

My wife was 'tidying up' a couple of weeks ago and threw out my entire service history in which I've noted, dated and retained receipts for everything I've done to the Landy. I was devastated.

3 lessons, cycling is bad for you. Although, that's a another tool I could add to my emergency tool collection - a bike :)

I also noticed there is a lot of resistance when pressing the accelerator, which will be why the cable snapped. But the resistance is internal to the cable itself. The throttle assembly and pedal move easily.

PS. I normally wear safety boots in the beast so I had not noticed the additional resistance - it was the AA patrol who pointed it out too me.

Hi all,

I got myself a replacement cable, and I don't like it! It's not smooth. Slightly jerky to apply, as if it's a little sticky. It's just certain parts that stick, so you can accelerate smoothly to a certain position, then press a little harder and the pedal will not budge , so you have to press too hard.

Such a simple thing, but it makes a big difference to the drive.

I've greased the pedal end of the cable, but it's made no difference at all. I've looked at the cable routing and I think I had it in the best position originally, moving it around makes no difference. The fuel pump end has a type of gaiter on it, which I don't want to break, so I've not touched that end.

I was thinking about taking the cable back out and putting some 3 in 1 oil down it and letting gravity work it's magic.

Any ideas? It's really getting on my nerves.

Its probably nylon lined so oil may not be a good idea, silicone spray may help, what make is the cable?

It's Bearmach. I've already tried GT85 spray, but from the pedal end without removing the cable, so it won't have penetrated very well.

If its a lined cable adding oil can make the liner expand and it will actually make the cable stiffer to move as the liner starts to clamp the inner.

I got it from a local garage, so I'll pop in tomorrow and get some advice.

Funny how it's always the little things that cause bother :)

When I fitted my 200tdi I used a bearmach cable, and have this same issue, stiff and jerky, I've tried silicon spray and it sort of helps.

Not sure if anyone's mentioned it buy you might want to have a look at the bellcrank mechanism down at the pump end. I know when i replaced the cable on my 2.5D 110 I noticed that the alignment there was odd, and it was causing the cable to pull against the side of the housing - a no-no for longevity. The bushing on the bellcrank was gone to hell as well - ended up replacing it to kill the bellcrank wobbling.

Make sure the cable is straight to the pull of the bellcrank, and that the pull at the pedal is the same.

One thing to try as well is disconnecting the cable end at the pump and have a mate hang onto the end and pump the pedal - see if it's the cable sticking or something else elsewhere.
