I have a new (to me) disco 1 300tdi. The previous owner only very recently (as in after I’d agreed to buy the vehicle but before exchanging cash) installed a stainless steel (not case hardened) turbo boost pin to the injector pump.

Obviously he said it made a huge difference to the performance, however after reading up a bit on this, it
seems its a cheap part which i dont want to risk wearing and causing future issues. I also have no EGT gauge installed as yet (i plan on fitting one of these regardless for monitoring).

I have the original pin and would like to refit that iand monitor the egt with that fitted before considering buying a case hardened pin in future. Will the original pin be ok or i source a new one?

Any thoughts, tips or things to be wary of?

Installing the original pin should be a straight swap.

The only difference in the pins is the profile the needle sits against.

The only likely issue is if the diaphragm, smoke screw and star wheel have been adjusted after the boost pin was fitted but tbh most injection pumps get fiddled with before someone spends out on a boost pin anyway.

Read up on IP tuning so you understand whats happening with each adjustment in case you need to wind it back a bit.
 
Cool thanks. Ive been doing a little reading about turning the star wheel or the mixture screw- like you say theres no sire fire way to know whats been done in the past with it so I will make sure I go steady.

Is this boost mod removal the sort of thing anybody would normally do? See i dont know what it was like before the mod, but knowing there are additional
Things you must monitor like the EGT, im just wary of having a mod with know way to monitor how it affects the engine itself.
 
There's loads of guides on the net for tweeking the fip - do you have the original pin to put back in? You can re-install it using the wear marks as a guide for the stock setup, but as BB says no doubt other things have been changed over the years already - an EGT and boost gauge is fairly easy to install, if you're serious about it.

Shouldn't need to worry for the short term re EGT's, as long as max fuelling has not been changed and she isn't smokey. (and you aren't using it to tow / drive everywhere at wide open)
 
Yeah theres a little bit of smoke if you go hard on acceleration from standing (not that i normally do but sometimes theres a lorry coming!)

Other than that its pretty clean. There is a boost gauge installed
On the dash already so i thought a temp gauge alongside would be pretty useful.

Its the original pin that will go back in. It will be good to see what sort of difference it makes
 
Thats no worry, if there's a fairly continuous black chuff before the turbo spools up fully I'd think the star wheel has seen half or 3 quarters of a turn as well.

There is a nylon spacer that goes under the original pin as well, if you want it 100% original - if the previous owner supplied it

Yep- got the nylon spacer to put back in too.
Will let you know how i get on when i get a chance to swap it over this week.
 
And heres a picture of the cheap “trial” boost pin after less than 200 miles. A clear indentation from the fuel pin in the non hardened s/steel.
The original bosch on the other hand only has mere marks, with no indentation (which i used as a guide when reinstalling.
The difference was immediately apparent- the acceleration much smoother, no smoke whatsoever and a relief that a high quality part is back in use.

Make sure you get the real deal if going for a boost pin for the 300tdi- i wont be going for one as I am now more
