i got my first discovery yesterday after getting into the land rover scene with my free lander last year. its a 1995 land rover discovery 300tdi. 155k on clock with nearly a complete service history.
got it in workshop today and checked it allover changed all oils and coolant its pretty solid underneath it has had the rear archs welded in new sills and inner wings at front. boot floors solid enough its been undercoated before so its protected it.
few nigly bits to do to smarten it up a bit there's a few bubbles coming around the rear light unit on the drivers side then a little bit on bottom of drivers door apart from that its spot on.

let me know what you think please. i want to make it into a road going car with off road spec but not decided what to do first.

yeah i know but it was filthy full of gun cartriges and feathers and about 2 inchs of mud on chassis. wish id got some photos of it before to show difference.

My advice for mods:

2" lift with extended braided brake hoses (are worth it just for the brakes upgrade), 265/75/16, camel cut where necessary, remove front bumper valance, decat and blank EGR, modify injection pump, strip intake system and clean, ideally get hot tanked, timing belt change ideally to new pulley spec, strip calipers and check for seized pistons, fit new pads and discs where necessary, check and reset wheel bearings whilst there, ditch centre exhaust box, ditch mudflaps if fitted, strip interior, check floors and then replace but remove all sound deadening matting, check front swivel preload and front axle ball joints, bleed steering box and find engine oil leaks, replace oil cooler hoses of leaking.



That lot, in my opinion, is what should be done to every 300tdi disco before you even start looking further into mods or repairs. A clean cut list of things to do that are all either cheap, easy or very worthwhile, with tried and tested status.

That's a bloody good list and good advice

except


beware of the de-catting, it's going to be an MOT failure this year.
There's debate over the EGR also being a fail but you should be able to do that so that the examiner can't tell.
 
looks a nice clean example that mate, hardwicks nice this time of year isnt it, get the bearings done brakes checked make sure there is no more rust in the usual places, if it hasnt been undersealed get it done and should be solid for years to come

as far as i know the decat is a grey area for diesels at the moment , i know of at least 4 cars that have passed this year without cats , why not get decat pipe and stock the cat pipe for mot
YOU COULD ALSO RENT OUT THE CAT FOR MOT'S:D

I also am aware of mot situation but the most up to date info as far as i know is that yes it's still not crystal clear, and the chances are its alright for mot.

Anyway, lets be honest, mot it then decat it, rinse and repeat next year. And yes that cat rent idea would be great!
 
it isnt going to fail without a de-cat! i will put a months wages on it, mine passed with a full straight throught on with no back box, and guess what the mot tester said..... 'sounds nice doesnt she'.

De-cats, EGR's and straight through exhausts are a big land rover taboo that everyone seems to be scared of these days.

My land rover has no cats, no EGR and a straight through system and just filling it up scares me lol :D

Great advice! :D I'm in a similar situation and i'm currently writing out a "todo" list with the TD5. I'll be printing this off and attaching to the list.
1 question, why remove the sound deadening matting?
