I usually manage to replace the bearings on my two steel idlers, the tensioner idler I can swap or put a new Dayco onto, but there is a third idler which goes in place of the aircon pump, ERR6456 which is the idler plus the adapter bracket, current price is £165 plus VAT :eek::eek:

It is also obsolete :(:(

So, what other idlers do I have the choice of fitting?

TD5 ERR6493 looks similar, but no guarantee that the offset is the same as the V8 one.

Has anyone else hit this problem?

Once I get rid of the ACE system, I won't need the idler, but for now it is needed.

why you wanna get rid of ace??i think quinton hazel though could be someone else do downloadable catalogue of many many idlers..

I don't drive the car in such a fashion that ACE makes that much difference. Support for the system is dropping away, no other users in terms of vehicles, and mine is a 1998 build, so I have a solid ARB set ready to go on.

Thanks for the QH link, I'll have a look.

i have said catalogue at work..will try to remember to bring home...

Am i being stupid or something but why do you need a idler for the ac pump if it isnt there, carnt you just buy the belt for ace no air con, as like a Td5 or does it need the idler there instead ?

The idler is there for ACE no aircon. Take out the ACE and no idler but another belt.

It's to do with getting the belt sufficiently round the pulley circumferences to transmit the power needed.

Could you not just buy a second hand aircon pump (around 50quid) and bolt it in place, as dont they spin feely until the clutch is engaged ?
Just blank the inlet and outlet off and then once you have removed the ace take it off and sell it again ?

Just threw a couple away.... :)

Yes, I could do that, but hopefully easier to get an idler to carry on doing the job.

Peter

I know exactly what you mean buy having the drive belt sufficiently around the bottom pulley for drive
As you have removed the ACE pump and Air con pump there is a hell of a lot of strain taken of the drive belt
As said will a shorter belt defo no do?

obviously i cant see how the bet runs ,I just thought id stick me nose in :D

At present, we have no aircon but do have ACE. That's one belt out of four choices available.

If we have an ACE breakdown away from home, we have another, shorter belt that we can use by avoiding the ACE pulley and the aircon position idler.

At the moment we have the idler there and the ACE is working.

Here are the four options:

The idler and bracket comes up on two of those layouts, Part 10 on the first and Part 7 on the second.

The third layout is what we would end up with if we ditched ACE altogether.

I see wot you mean now
As some one said putting a air con pump back on until you remove the ace looks the cheaper option
then again if you get an idler you can use it again on another motor if need be

Got onto the Dayco website this morning, they have a near identical pulley, #89008 which is $15.95 in the 'States, but postage is a bit chunky, so I've bought two and they will ship free of charge to our friend in Cupertino CA, who will post them over next week.

I'll confirm they are an exact replacement as soon as they get here. 76mm diameter, 17mm ID, 26mm wide, 7-groove. The width is the only unknown, that is the width of the pulley without the side flanges, outside of the flanges it is 32mm. They only do a few 7-groove pulleys, so hopefully I'll be OK. Dayco make all the plastic idlers and the tensioners.

Dayco pulleys arrived from our friend in California this morning, posted 21st March by USPS.

Dayco 89008 fits the belt perfectly and the pulley will be fitted tonight.

Only difference is that the old one has a 6303 bearing, new one has a 6203, same as the small steel idler below it.

Hi Listerdiesel,

Very useful info on this thread, thank you very much.

I don't suppose you'd sell your spare 89008 pulley would you? The one on my Disco is shot and I can't find a replacement (or GoodYear 49004 equivalent) anywhere in the UK. My Disco's going to be off the road for 2/3 weeks until I can get one from the states otherwise.

I could pick it up from you, I'm not a million miles away.

I'd be happy to order a replacement from the US for you.

Dave.

I now have the pulley I need, thanks to Peter.

I'd just like to point out what a thoroughly nice chap Peter is.
