Started fitting a replacement motor today in the disco, engine went in smoothly untill the splines started to locate on the torque converter, had to loosen both engine mounts just to get the engine sat at the correct position and now I'm stuck with a 5-6mm gap all the way around the bell housing but I don't wanna tighten the housing up incase it brakes it, I've tried everything to push and pull it into place and it still won't go, anyone got any advice? Cheers

DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES WIND THEM TOGETHER ON THE BOLTS - you will break the pump in the gearbox.

Take the engine out and rotate the torque convertor slowly, on a level plane, with a little inward pressure until it locks home (most garages wedge a little block between the convertor and the bell housing when they remove an engine to stop the convertor working loose).

Providing you haven't attempted to crank them together your gearbox should be ok.

It is a common thing - see the Auto box installation notes on Ashcroft transmissions' website.

Good luck - hope this helps

torque convertor must be fitted to gear box fully before fitting to engine.if another engine fitted etc depth of t/c securing lugs from face of bell housing must be1-2mm greater then distance of outer face of drive plate from rear face of engine

Slight balls up so to say I've fitted the torque converter onto the engine then dropped it in! If I lift the engine and using a jack to raise the box and rotate the via the crankshaft pulley bolt will it drop in or do I have to start again?

Are we to assume that you pulled the torque convertor out of the gearbox whilst still attached to the engine?

I hope you didn't because the likelihood of a damaged gearbox pump is very high.

In assuming you did NOT do this -

Remove the bonnet if you haven't already.

Remove the engine from the car.

Remove the torque convertor from the engine.

GENTLY place the torque convertor into the gearbox, rotating it with a gentle push until lt locks home - keep it level and in situ.

Re-introduce the engine - do not attempt to locate the engine mounts until the engine is securely on the gearbox - that is what the hoist is for.

once it is home you can put a couple of bolts through the bellhousing ad hand-tighten them.

Then mount the engine loosely- do not tighten the bolts.

Install the remainder of the bellhousing bolts and torque up as per manual

Get under the car, rotate the torque convetor/flexplate assembly, and put in the bolts - assuming you have removed the access plate.

Finally tighten up your engine mounts and replace torque convertor access cover to base of bellhousing.

I hope this works, but I have a terrible feeling you may need a new gearbox.

Fingers crossed for a positive outcome.

No I never removed the engine from the vehicle, it was removed and in bits when I bought it, I fitted the torque converter onto the flywheel and dropped the lot in, it's located on the splines and just sat in place on the engine mount but as I stated earlier theres a 5-6mm gap around the bell housing, there are 3 bolts in the housing which I put in on a few thread just to line everything up, i turned the engine over a few times but it wouldn't drop in place so to say so I downed tools and resorted to coming on here for some information about it as the manual I have is quite vague on things, thanks for the replys by the way

Ok Brother - take your point.

I am assuming apples for apples here - disco 2 with 4.0 crossbolted engine with ZF22EH electronic gearbox.

If so then go through the procedure detailed above - the convertor should be a medium sized one and should slot back into the gearbox bellhousing allowing enough room for the flexplate and flywheel - just keep rotating it gently with a little inward pressure till it slots home.

then follow the plan

Thanks gents I shall follow both tips on sat or sun and get this motor dropped in, it annoying me now because I want it up and running lol
