Hi everyone hope you all had a good Christmas and happy new year when it comes.....
I have a disco 2 td5 and have a couple of questions that I wonder if anyone could answer, I noticed the other day that the rev counter has no red limit, I think just about every car I've had has, that said I usually have petrol so is this a diesel thing or LR quirk, the reason I ask is that Lara's an Auto and on setting the cruise control the other day she was still accelerating passed 5000rpm without changing up so I had to shut off the CC to get her to change up,
again I'm not use to diesels but when cold if I show her any sort of throttle the noise is unbearable, and as I live in a dip the first run on a morning is a very slow affair 15mph max, as I feel I'm doing damage going any faster, is this normal or should I be looking for something in need of repair?
finally I can select any gear (auto box) without the need to press the button, on investigating this, I found when taking off the knob, the plastic rod to be broken, how easy is this to fix and does it break when ever the knob is removed, as just prior to my purchase the disco had work done under the centre gear console.
hope someone can shed some light on any of this and thanks in advance.:)
 
It's a diesel thing as far as I'm aware. Diesel engines, by their very nature have to be governed or else they'd just run away to destruction without much input from the driver, so they just run out of revs. However, unlike a petrol engine rev limiter which chops the ignition creating the stutter at full rpm, the diesel tends to just back off the power. In the TD5 case that should occur before 5000 rpm. According to wikipedia - cheap and dirty I know, peak power for the auto is at 5000 rpm. Hopefully some other auto owning LZ'ers can verify??? Max rpm is 5460 - not under power, but in an overrun situation.

The rattling sound when cold - does it go away once the engine has warmed up? If so it's fairly normal, although certain clearances can be checked - I'm not sure if it would be valve or injector without doing a search myself.

No idea about the broken button (selector baulk??? ) on the stick. Sorry.

Thanks very much for that, it is when is cold, though I wouldn't say a rattle its more like its under strain as if shes been asked to much of I think theres a problem with the autobox or sensors governing its selection as soon as the expense of Christmas is out of the way ill get her booked in. under strain...as in the rattle goes away when you back off the throttle - it's probably normal...probably...
 
front crank dampers often fail and are worse when engines cold as theres more vibration ,engine is fly by wire all ecu controlled so you shouldnt be able to over rev it
 
+1 for the crankshaft damper.... a good one is quite expensive thoug but a cheap one doesnt worth even the less money...also check the glow plugs, cos a well sealed Td5 will start on compression but the lack of the glowplugs post heat action would make the motor noisyer when cold
 
Thanks guys, I've never even heard of a crank damper so I shall look into that, hope the glow plugs are fine as she starts on the button what ever the temp. So no matter how hard I rev no damage should occur, due to the ecu over riding the throttle then is that the idea. I know the TD5 are quite revvy but it feels like im thrashing her sometimes. Aye, one of the reasons I had mine chipped. It has more go at less throttle now, no need to chase the rev counter.

As for the "noise", when first started, many diesel engines sound like they are trying to escape from the engine bay, but go quietER when warm.

The td5 auto box is getting on a bit now and they do hold onto the gears for longer when cold, but it should be much better when it's warmed up.
Also the torque converter wont 'lock' in 4th(about 52mph) until the box is all warmed up.

Thanks for all the sound advise and much appreciated help puts my mind at rest I'm starting to get to know the old girl now and how to treat her right.... just love having a Landy again. :D
