Once you've been out a fair bit in different places you get to know whether a lane looks legal. You know what the markings for BOATs are on Landranger & Wayfarer maps?

& if in doubt, dun't drive it 'till you've checked.

You don't have to religiously check your route everytime you go anywhere, you'd soon get fed up!

Got ya. I did come across a lane today that was marked on the map as a BOAT but had been changed to a bridleway, it did cross my juvenile mind to have a go as the signs were erected by the lovely farm owner, but after walking down it, it was obvious no one had driven it for a while.

Do the local authorities change them due to over usage or is there another reason other than people being complete jerk offs??

Get the most up to date OS map to get a fighting chance! And yes, they change quite frequently but not all that much, if is says Bridleway i wouldn't risk it, especially if it looks like it hasn't been driven. If it's green + signs on a relatively recent OS pathfinder then you are on to a fairly safe bet, and at least you'd have some good ammo to show if you got stopped.

Local Authorities first apply a TRO which fairly often becomes permanent. There is an appeals process, but motorised users are rarely, if ever successful in challenging them.

If you find a lane that's been re-signed by a land owner it's well worth checking the actual status. Even then it's worth being sensible driving it & polite if challenged.

Like I said before its the newest map I could find on the area, I know that doesn't mean it necessarily is, but its definitely got the + signs on it. Guess I'll be checking that out too then.

This is going to get far more in depth than I imagined!

That will be my next action then. Well after I make the most of my bank holiday monday, and I just cleaned my landy!!!

Doesnt need to be too in-depth, it's quite simple really - as Grippa says it becomes very intuiative very quickly. You get a feeling of whether or not you should be there!

It dun't have to. There's a good few groups who go laning regularly on here & we don't have to contact the ROW geezer too often.

Depends if you've loads of legal lanes in your area. We're lucky here. There's loads South of Basingstoke, loads over in Surrey, loads in Wiltshire & Salisbury Plain's an easy drive.

There's not too many in my area but I'm always up for a weekend away camping and occasionally some cider, oh and maybe vodka or . . . . er whisky and some bbq'd food.

Ah, marvellous, count me in. It may take some time but I like it, and especially the 5 max limit makes it more interesting to find the most exclusive and exuberant quotes. I'm not sure its ok to link exuberance and you lot yet though?!?! :D ;)
