Hello Forum.

Yesterday, I started to get a funny noise, whilst idling - Between 600 - 1000ROM, i got what is a whining humming noise, which I can feel through the Accel pedal. Soon as i rev over 1000rpm it goes away, it also goes away when driving, AND goes away when I roll the car (put her in drive and move in slow traffic)

Now its not the belts and its really loud inside the car - when i stand outside I can barely hear it.

It started to happen just a couple of days ago.

The funny thing it GOES AWAY OCCASIONALLY - like yesterday evening - it was fine.

Its not the gearbox, as i cannot feel anything through the box, and it happens in all gears (P,N,R,D,3,2,1)

I was hoping for some pointers - could it be the PAS pump?

Does the noise change or go away if you idle and turn the steering wheel? this would inidicate the PAS pump.

Otherwise maybe ACE system, fuel pump in the fuel tank (you can hear this priming when you switch the ignition on) water pump - although this would tend to be louder outside the car or maybe you are hearing the centrifugal oil filter spinning, not had this myself but I understand they can sometimes be noisy.

I suspect it could be the PAS pump - Why? I ask I hear you say, Well when I turn the steering to the right, I get a groaning noise, which sounds nothing like the noise I have BUT I suspect the 2 are related.

With regards to teh Water Pump - Thats fine, I checked and no noise - and teh Fuel Pump again fine - no noise when priming or running -

I will have to order a PAS pump soon - I Guess

can you hear it with the bonnet open so that you can get a rough idea where the noise is coming from i read some where that td5's had a problem with spot welds coming apart in the bulk head area and making funny noises,if it is that then you will have to live with it.
check everything that is attached to the bulk head is still where it should be and not vibrating against anything else.and don't forget the clips one might have busted.
 
hi i've just bought a td5 es 2000 it also has a similer noise between 800rpm & 1500 rpm goes when driving ... bit worried so got it upon a ramp yesterday stethescope in hand and have traced it to a noiesy ace pump situated along os mid chasis rail, not quiet sure what to do about it . any one got any ideas?

The ACE pump sits in the engine bay, and is driven by a drive belt (along with water pump, alternator, air con etc etc).

Half way along the off side chassis rail is an ACE valve block that directs hydraulic preesure to the ACE actuators that work the torsion bars.

If you are hearing a noise from the valve block, it may well be that you have air in the system and it needs bleeding.

Unfortunately bleeding the ACE circuits can't be done without connecting up to the ACE ECU and running through the bleeding procedure.

Aside from checking the fluid levels, there is not much you can do with it....

Changing the power steering pump is not as hard a job as it first looks. I can give advice as i recently did the job myself. I bought a second hand one with 3 months warranty for £75, the oil is a special oil fron landrover at £10 a litre one bottle will be enough. The ACE system kicks in around 25mph when cornering but maybe DISCO II (member ) could advise more.:)
 
Annoyingly Complex Electrics. Not suffered by normal land rover users, just us Disco II nutters. Basically when cornering at silly speeds it stiffens the anti roll bars to the effect of 0.5g, Land rover reckoned they could have gone further but this would have resulted in a false sense of security and an upside down Disco. Advanced Cornering Enhancement, it works, but maybe it's not really necessary. Means you can run softer suspension for off road comfort...............................Bollocks.:rolleyes:
