Thanks chaps!

I posted awhile ago regarding buying a classic range rover. THis is all useful information! Liked the idea of a range rover with a disco TDI engine, interesting idea, all of the bling, but a bit cheaper. Do they have the same engine and I'm being really niaeve? If they are different engines, do they just bolt together?

Any help will be useful, regards

Boo.

I reckon the bmw doisel could be good but a tdi and box etc for £300 notes is way cheap and the 200 does run on veg ok...

the p38 is ace!!! and you know it!!!

as for mpg, 17? dream on!! suppose you'd get it if you lived at the top of a hill!!

12 round town and 21 on a run!

I'm currently getting a steady average of 18.8mpg with my 4.6 1999 Vogue which I have resisted converting to LPG........touch wood she's got 128000 miles on the clock now, bought her 5 years ago at 40-something thousand miles, spent lots on regular maintenance plus usual airbags / flat battery syndrome / air con issues - but the engine is sweet and purrs with a throaty roar, and she's a wonderful drive despite being 10 years old.

I read about all the huge engine issues on this forum and others with trepidation as I'm not up to doing massive repairs myself, but I'm hoping she'll last a long while yet. Was discouraged years ago from LPG due to the many many issues about running hot and popping the engine prematurely - I was told that the 4.6 engine is particularly sensitive in this regard.

Hope you find the right one and that all the negative comments are not too offputting - there are lots of positives about RRs as well, like nothing drives like the big V8 running smoothly and its a great weekend outings and shopping / garden centre vehicle!!!

Hi, I bought a late 99' P 38 beginning of this year and I am delighted with it. I paid £2500 for it with the knowledge that it needed a little work to make it A1. Namely, front cats had gone (Powerflow fitted a complete manifold down handbuilt exhaust in T705 stainless with 2 x twin exhaust outlets £650 all in with lifetime warranty 1st owner) I don't plan to sell it for a while. Mass air flow sensor (£30 new off eBay) oils and filters all round and new plumbing (radiator). Okay I spent a few pounds £1000 to begin with but the condition of the RR warranted it. Regarding reliability it has been exemplary in the 3K miles I've already covered. Oxford blue and cream hide set it off and a lovely burble at the rear end. Check for dampness in the footwells and rear lower hatch for rust. Any coolant loss requires attention but don't panic it could be as simple as radiator hoses/matrix o rings or more seriously a cracked block.

SO the 300/200Tdi is common between the defender and disco's, but the range rover has it's own engine (BMW 6 cylinder weasel)? The RRC had a common weasel engine to the efender of the time? Apologies, i'm very green! WHy was it a pain mr BoB? Surely there is acres of space under the bonnet of a range rover? Or was it a pain in the backside due to trying to line everything up.

I've helped my brother convert VW vans to alternative engines, and with the help of convertor plates made it relatively easy. Admittedly, someone other than us made the plates......

Just asking the question, I've recently seen a Chevy Cheyenne truck converted to run a transit 2.5 weasel (from a 190). Again all bling no budget. My favourite. Make it look sexy, but cheap to use!:D

thanks for all the replies, im getting more hooked on the idea of a rangie and i have expressed an interest in sirus's rangie, if i go for it i intend to diy fit a blaze lpg system.

would fitting the lpg add any value or just make it more desirable ?

fook all to do with me but i dont think you would go too far wrong with sirus rangie,he seems to have done the things that matter,he is also got it advertised on the forum so it must be ok else he would get slagged of if it was crap,IMHO that is.:)

im going to see his rangie on saturday, 300 miles by train lol, hoping to be driving home in style and skint :D

I know it can be hard to find someone who owns a RR P38 to go with you, but it could be invaluable.

The thing with these machines, is that they are just nothing like a standard car and driving oine for the first time can be overwhelming.

It's only when you know your way around one, can you spot and find any faults.

If you're lucky enough to find a good one, you will love it.

I found a brilliant one, 2001 diesel manual 62k miles that is immaculate and I love the thing.

Good luck.

Just sent mine to a local garage for the Viscous Fan, water pump and Serpentine Belt doing, (viscous fan is kaput) getting everything done for £160....not really that expensive!
