Jeez...what is the world coming to when a 20 mile journey puts you off getting what you say you really want?? I do 100 miles a day in my 90 5 days a week...and the odd days of mud and fun more than make up for that.

I have come across loads of shagged out TD5's over the years.
Yes they were pretty clean but the engines had severe problems

they would've been early TD5's then and not late TD5's as you stated you would buy.;)
 
Just out of interest, what was the difference between early and late TD5s? When did they change over? Cos ive heard not to buy a pre 2000 TD5 (not that im thinking of it......hmm)

2003 onwards are the ones to have.

Early TD5's suffer/suffered from lack of locktite on oil pump bolt, porous/cracked heads, oil in injector looms etc.

The 2003 on have the modified head.

Actually it's EU3 cars that have the modified head, they were produced as early as a manufacture date of sept 2001 - I know as I have one.

What was the modification Biglad? What are the signs on pre modification of possible problems. I've got an 01 but not sure on manu date. Also possibly goin for another to add to my collection so would be good to know what to look for. I might even sell my Disco and Defender and look for a "Mint TD5 with a 300tdi transplant"lol:D
 
..... engine 15P(EU3) instead of 10P(EU2)......storm both but with small differences...some bits doesnt match from one to another...different EGR, headlights and other small enhancements.... besides in contradistinction with others i've rarely seen storm engines with "severe problems" most problems are with engine management or fuelling system(quite easy to fix if u own a proper scanner to tell u wich sensor or part has failed) not with the engine itself..... i've put my oppinion here http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f8/300tdi-im-gonna-get-1-a-113264.html#post1150562

I think those who want u to go for a Defender(which i love too) are thinking to a Td5 one:D;)

EU3 cars have a vin number of at east 2A745000;

The EU3 cars have heads that are made differently with one internal and one external fuel rails, plus the injectors work at higher pressure and the EGR has a cooler.

They also have a flashable ECU.

This does not just apply to 'facelift cars" - mine is non faclift but EU3.
 
Thats more like it mate, a wee bit of banter does no harm. I could seriously do with a new headlight tho. Offside one cracked to buggery. Any idea how much they are and if self leveling makes a difference to the price?
 
My tip for buying a TD5 is be prepaired to spend a few quid on it cause they do go wrong. ( the anount will depend on how well the vehicle has been looked after in the past and how good you are with the spanners ).

This is the same for ALL modern motors without warranty.

I,ve had a good experience with my TD5 Disco, and my brother has had a pretty faultless run with his TD5 90.

I,d be surprised to see a TD5 Disco, late or otherwise, that had,nt had new fuel pump,fuel pressure regulator,slave and master clutch cylinders,starter motor cotacts, air bags and height sensors and leaky sunroofs. ACE pipes are also known for corrosion.

The 200 and 300 TDi,s are great engine,s, but those cars are getting on now, and I can see why people want something a bit newer.

If it was just a Defender that you want then perhaps the engine stands out on its own a bit more.

I dont think theres a " wrong and right " to choosing.

Your doing the right thing by researching before you buy, and hopefully your findings will help you decide, and put you in the picture about these vehicles.

There was a thread a while back about the possible of beneifts of buying a higher miles TD5, that if looked after could well have all these niggly faults fixed. Mine has 137K now and in the 2.5 years I've had it I've fixed most of those already mentioned here.

Sometimes I feel a bit bored with mine and fancy a change, but the car is supremely practical for me and I'm reluctant to pass it on to someone else after all the effort I've put into it.

One point to add is that if you have access to another car you're set as you can afford to have downtime on your TD5 while you're doing your repairs.
