Hi all,

I am thinking about buying a Discovery, the primary use will be as a towing vehicle, but also as big vehicle to go camping with kayaks, bikes and dogs.

I don't have have a huge budget, £2.5k is all I really want to spend, it won't be my only car so won't be doing huge miles.

Looked at few 4x4's but keep coming back to Landrover.

At my budget am I making a mistake or will I be able find a good one?

I've recently bought an MY51 discovery 2 for near that. It runs great, looks great and I'm using it everyday.

I didn't have to look especially hard, was more of an impulse buy, so I suspect there's plenty out there in that range.

Happy hunting..

You could pick up an earlyish D2 for £2.5k.
If your miles will be low, could allways go for a V8 as aposed to the TD5, pick one up cheaper too.
Put a few quid aside for any repairs/fixes though :)

Picked up a late D1 for £1300, havent had many problem that I haven't expected,

D2 TD5 might be your best bet for reliability, but theres alot more to go wrong, plus the D1's (even the late ones) are starting to look tired.

I would go for the best D1 that you can find, ideally without sunroofs and automatic.
Sorry to be a traitor, but I think my second choice would a Jeep grand cherokee 2.7 diesel rather than an early D2.

The discovery 1 suffer from body rust and the discovery 2 suffer from chassis rust but you can find some good ones if you look around if it's a disco 1 I'd buy the diesel if it's the disco 2 I'd buy V8 ( and I did just that myself)
There is the option of a range rover or jeep Cherokee both will do what you want but they do have issues

Nothing wrong with a D1 V8 if you look after it, I would have had mine 17 years next month and the only mechanical frailer has been a water pump bearing, the only time a spanner has been on the engine other than changing plugs and draining the oil.

Well I have done a bit research and my budget is going to be about £4000 so I think I am looking at discovery 2. Miles for money all seem to be excess of 100k, I am guessing that is not an issue if the history is good?

Nope 100k on a D2 is OK as long as it's got history and runs nicely etc.
Take a few for a drive before buying one and see how they compare and will give you pointers of what to look for when buying. Do a mileage check on VOSA website too (free) and check mileages/passes/fails/advisories over the years ;)

IMO keep a few quid in the bank for any repairs if necessary

Yep, I will keep at least £500 back to sort out any issues that come up.

I have looked at other options but the Discovery is what appeals, what I really would like is a Defender but they are big money and perhaps not quite as suited for what I need it for. So the Discovery is what I am after.

Keep an eye on the for sale section on here and other LR websites. Members of forums/enthusiasts tend to look after their Landies more :)

Do me a favour. We thrash fook outta them, then flog em when they're too firked to do anything with..

Well I have picked one up, year 2000 with 105k on the clock, it has a full history. Tiny bit of body rust I want to sort but in good nick for 14 year old car.

First thing is a full service and Cam belt change, can any recommend a good independent land rover specialist in or around Dunstable in Bedfordshire?

Already time to hang my head in shame TD5 has a chain not belt I think. Time to buy a Haynes manual....

Yes bud, has a chain....but that's good news !! :D

I have a D2 Haynes if you want it £10, not a million miles from you.

Also got a nanocom if you wanted to plug her in
