No quote no. Told him to do what it needs to get it right.

I want to make sure there is some preventative maintenance there so any bits that can be sensibly replaced along the way (new oil pump etc) to get it done.

Should make for an interesting 'guess the number' game when I pick it up..!

How bad could it be ;)
Well, if we're guessing numbers.................. bottom end rebuild 1.5K+ ......... just a guess as full situation unknown including garage hourly rate.

The last time they did something on it I think, think, they charged £45-50 plus VAT an hour.

Not sure whats needed just yet so as you rightly say it's a bit of a guessing game. I suspect they'll let me know more next week as they were getting someone to measure the guideways or whatever they are to see if they can be 'saved'.

Part of me wants to go for a V8 conversion but that's just asking for more time and cost really so I think I'll stick to OEM and get the td5 sorted. In my head this is going to be a 2 grand job so hopefully I'm not going to be too shocked?

WhTs most important is that once the new engine bits are sorted the thing is sorted for a loooooong time.

What other things are worth doing whilst they are in there??

Just read through your previous post where you gave a brief description of what the garage said including new crank. I hadn't considered that before. A new crank will cost you approx £600 on it's own. Not sure about the guideways...... perhaps they are talking about measuring the journals and pins on the crank? Or, the roller guides for the cam followers - not sure in a TD5 engine as I'm not familiar with it. Hopefully, another member will post on it. I reckon it would be more economical to get the crank ground, you'd then need to get big end and journal bearings to suite the new sizes. There's a lot of hours involved in doing all of that. Chances are they would have to send the crank away to be ground. You'll want them to check the bores while they're in there and I'd be checking the camshaft too. Hopefully, they are experienced enough to know how far to go, given what they find, then let you know.

I don't know the people involved but things can easily get very expensive in a case like this. May be worth sitting with them and discussing the story.
If you can look at getting a second hand engine from a reputable source then consider both options you might find it is less costly and selling some good bits of the old engine may help to offset the final cost.

Would it not be much cheaper to fit a used but good engine?
There are plenty for sale online.
theres loads on eBay at the moment. Some with warranties. If cost is no drama, then I'm sure a rebuild is the best option - should be good for another 200k miles. But if cost is a factor, then a replacement engine may be the way to go...

Thanks.

The guys are certainly experienced, the owner was some sort of head mechanic for LR - they gave him an anniversary P38 Range Rover as a gift/mark of service. He's still got it.

I wondered about a replacement engine but surely (beyond the warranty period (which I bet they wriggle like crazy out of....)) you're just running the gauntlet again?

I suppose at least with mine we know what we are working with and as stated by Balbas I should be good for another 200K miles? I won't get that from a secondhand eBay engine I doubt?

I'll talk about options tomorrow. He wants to get the crank and journals measured first to see what's what.

A1203 - everything you have said sounds very much like what he said to me over the phone so I think that is what's happening yes.

Ps given this wasn't the oil pump bolt is the camshaft still at risk? It all sounded like a bottomenf problem?

I would have thought that if you lose oil pressure, for whatever reason, then anything that requires a pressurised oil feed would be at risk.

Been in the Orkney Islands until yesterday. Now working in the big smoke so no idea if it's fixed. Should find out Friday what the score is.

Hopefully the original engine was save able.

Ok. Nipped into the garage yesterday hoping to see the engine being built back up but they have been delayed with other jobs :(

He did say they had looked again at it though and can confirm the oil pump bolt WAS loose. He said when they removed the chain or something the bolt rattled around.

Annoying!

Anyway, it is what it is now. Just want it fixing and the thing Back as I'm missing not driving it.

My vote would be fit another engine! Ask your garage to look on Copart.

There are at least 10 possible donor cars!
Buy a running Cat C/D get them to break it, sell the rest.
They can drop the sump and check the oil pump bolt before they install it.
A total engine rebuild/install is going to be at least £2K, a new oil pump alone is £300 if you can get one.
If the engines been starved of oil, all of it will need checking.
The bores may have started to score if they were not getting oil from the oil jet, same goes for the small ends.

It’s back!!!

Finally, rebuilt engine, Brandt new crank, oil pump, etc etc

Engine runs sooooooooooo nicely now and sounds super quiet.

Really pleased to have the car back.

Run it in now so need to drop the oil and we are done.

Happy Td5 boy :)

Here it is ;)
