4.0 litre petrol p38 went out to the beastie and took off the camshaft and got some mole grips and span the inlet and exhaust valves round put it all together and it seemed to have worked havent had it out yet but tick over it seems to have stopped backfiring woohoo.
Came to fit the rocker cover and didn't have one of those torx sockets out with the hacksaw now i need a screwdriver.

You may have had a bit of crud between the valve and the seat and now you have dislodged it. Fingers crossed

You didn't take the camshaft off.

Sh1t then or old gasket or anything that will prevent the valve from seating. Had a customer years ago with a Beetle with a similar problem, he had dropped a nut down the carb and luckily it stuck between the valve and the seat so didn't do any damage to the piston,bore or the head.

Not quite sure what you did but well done for doing it. Did you take off the camshaft? Or just remove the timing chain.

The one at the top connected to pushrods I have always thought this was the camshaft.

that's the rockershaft. the camshaft sits between the V.. its a ballache to get out with the engine in situ.. have to take the rad out
