I'm 17, looking to get a Disco within the next year(ish).

The limit is about 3k, inc one year ins, leaving about 2k for the car...The condition is that it must be 15 yrs old.

Where are the main points to look out for on a Disco...Sills, Arches etc..? Had a search, anyone got any thin specifically?

They all seem to have done 150k miles plus, should that put me off?

finally, would i get something "decent" for 2K ish? I'm not that bothered about the paintwork, but i don't want something tatty.

Cheers

I got mine for 1250. The boot floor was rotten, the arches were ok. Its done 190k and still going strong. Half the electrics inside dont work (lights, rear wiper, illuminations)

Check the boot floor, the rear wheel arches inside the back doors. The inner arches of the front and back. The battery tray. The sunroofs leak like hell. Obvious engine stuff, mayo in the oil cap, oil in the coolant. White smoke on revving.

Make sure the turbo spools up and is working ok. Check for excessive noise from gearbox and transfer box.

Look for any sign of fuel leaking from injector surrounds.

Check wiring to headlights as they often corrode.

Raise each wheel and try to wobble the wheel. If you get any play the bearings might be on way out.

There is probably alot i've missed out, But if all that checks out there isnt alot that cant be fixed fairly easily.

Good luck!

yeah agree with checking insurance. They seem to have jumped up a huge amount at the minute, even more at 17 i should think

I would definitely check the insurance. I think you''ll be hard pushed finding insurance at your age for 1k. (Not knocking your age here at all). I'm 24, I have 5 years no claims and I pay £900 and that was the cheapest I could find before all the companies went and put their prices up. I do have protected no claims and recovery which does bump it up a little, but nothing major.
But by the sounds of it you'll end up paying more insurance than the cars worth! Insurance companies have a habit of only seeing your age and the engine size, and think you'll be a boy racer and whack the price up.
Although I've never known a Disco pull up at the lights next to me and want a race. It's normally the kids in their Clio's. Stupid brats.

Check the cost of your insurance before buying ;)

Thanks for the advice, so far, i have had a quote for £1156, which is rather good for 17 i think :)

Don't mind doing something myself, but not too keen on buying something that needs welding doing really....

just a quickie on the insurance try lancaster insurance dont know how good theyll be because of your age but theyve sved me over 300 quid

Same here, I have an 08 Golf R32 paying £700 with churchill and got a quote off them for £800 on my G reg 200tdi Disco. Went to Lancaster and was quoted about £200 for Disco.:p

I paid £600 for my 94 200 TDi disco

Boot floor is fine and only leak I can find is causing slightly damp carpet in the drivers footwell. Bodywork has a few rough bits but I'm being fussy saying that, didn't have mot or tax but mechanically it's mint with 150k on the clock.

Bargain me thinks.

Did have an alarm problem but was easily solved at no cost. :)
