Hi,
I'm going to look at a 2003 td5 auto es Discovery this weekend.
It has done just under 100,000 miles.
What are the main things I need to look out for?
How do I know if the suspension is functioning as it should?
What are the main things to look at on the engine?
I currently drive a 300 tdi 90.
I'm after a Discovery as I want something a bit more comfy to tow our big trailer around.

Any thoughts or advise would be good.

Make sure rear air bags go up and down And settle
Fuel pressure regulator leaking
Head gaskets or cracked heads tell tell signs go for a run get nice and hot there is a little out let on the expansion tank if that starts dripping when the system is cooling down feel the top hose take care will be hot if its rock hard the system is over pressurising
Water pumps leaks
If you feel a misfire can be oil in the injection loom afm can play up
Top hose bleed screw are easy to break
Gearbox and engine sumps leaks but heh is a discovery
Check doors all open when unlocked
Sunroofs leaks
Electric windows switches .....
Heated screens
Look at history carefull Ask if it has had the oil pump bolt done as these were known to come undone
Check if it's running pink coolant apart from that lot the engine is really good lol

I no as I have had all of the above when I bought a 2003 td5 Worst buy ever got rid.......

four wheels and an injun.

make sure it has most of these and makes a noise when you turn the key

just be aware that you'll probably notice it'll be missing a pedal. its unnatural I know, but don't worry, it is supposed to be like that.

always glad to be of assistance

Rather pleased with our Disco ES....auto and similar mileage....
Took it off road and electronics all kicked in......no need to fiddle with anything.....goes almost anywhere.
ABS? With 7 seats there's a lot of them!
About 27 mpg when using the cruise control......which is better than anticipated....

Just off for its first long run to Cornwall and hoping we'll be as happy with it on return.

The single most important thing to look for, when considering a Discovery II TD5 is the condition of the rear chassis, from the rear axle rearwards.

They rust badly due to little or no protection at the factory. If this is ok anything else that needs it can be easily fixed.

Get underneath and tap/scrape/poke gently, at the chassis rails to establish how bad the rust is - expect some superficial colouring.
