Evening Folks ,

I have managed to persuade the neighbour to let us use his lockup to do the neighbours Thermostat on his 04 TD4

Now I was just wondering if anyone can advise what is needed to be ordered and part numbers would be very helpful.

TIA

An in line thermostat mod is the way forwards. The factory thermostat fails in no time, like a couple of summers and you'll be replacing it again.

Will the inline Stat not fail as well ? It’s been the genuine star in it from new , 17summers @ winters it’s had as a genuine Stat

The factory thermostat soon sticks open, I've seen than fail after 2 years, which is a pain for a 4 hour job.
The in line thermostat from a Renault 4/5 (it's made by Gates) fits in the top hose, and generally lasts a good time, I've never known one to fail.

Hey Nodge68 I’m not doubting you at all. This is for the FL 1 TD4 and not for the FL 2 ? It looks a much quicker fix and if it fails it’s easily replaced ?

Just googled to see where I can get this all looks like EBay. Do I need anything else , also will it no throw up an issue with the original 1 still in place ?

Neighbour has asked me to order him this Thermostat.

That will work also as the inline but is 7 times the cost of a gates one, with the one in your photo you have to cut the hose, with the gates it is inserted into the original hose,

I have fitted loads of inline gates stats and not had one report of a failed one yet over the last 10 years, both to FL1 and to the Rover 75.

Smear washing up liquid or rubber grease into the hose and a little on the dome of the stat, this will help it insert easier, once you have removed the top hose.

Use a piece of alloy tube which i had made for the job, you can use the white washing machine out let pipe, about 4" long.

push it in until the copper end is either level or about 10ml below the end of the hose.

On the Rover 75 it can be inserted further, here are both side by side, note i have added the plastic clip to the FL1 hose to shows how it would look once the hose was fitted back, as you have to cut through the original stainless steel band, this was a manual FL1

Top hose is the Rover 75 one.

Make sure you also check the header tank for crazing and cracks, fit a new one if in doubt, to be honest i would fit a new one anyways if its not be changed since the car was new.

The original stat fails as in it opens to early and stops the engine getting up to temperature, of cause if the original is leaking or the water pump as failed then you would have to change the original stat, but the inline stat is the ay to go, which ever one you use metal insert as in your photo or the one i have showed.

This metal one shown in on a Rover 75.

An Auto FL1 would be different to fit Nodge can say more about that.

Just fitted an inline stat in my TD4 Auto, very easy...15 minute job...take hose off...lubricate hose & stat....placed stat on top of long 32mm socket ( or a bit of waste pipe would do ) pushed pipe over it....easy.

Now seem to get up to half-way after a few minutes....stuck at a quarter before.

Re-used existing spring clips.

( actually took over an hour as someone had nicked my antifreeze so had to go out and get some more  ).

Morning do you know off hand the size of clip on the hose I will need ?
and putting a gates one in that opens @89 degrees would be ok ?

As above.

Where do you get this kit from?
Googled to no avail. Also, help a numpty.
Which hose does it fir exactly. Thanks for any help.
Cheers.

GATES TH01489

That’s the thermostat part number
Then you will need the clips as well
Or there’s a full kit available on eBay
As far as fitting there’s a video oon YouTube

hello all.

As it goes my temp gauge does seem to go to normal on the dash. But when turning the heater on the rev,s rise as if the engine is not up to temp?
Also if you fit the mod thermostat, do you have to remove the original?

Thanks in advance as always.

Cheers.

No the old one stays
if it drops when the heater is on it’s probably best to put the kit in
