Hi all, this is properly on here somewhere, had the failed thermostat problem and rather than spend the hours getting the thing out, fitted an in line housing from a company called Specialist Components in Norfolk.
Took less than ten minutes to fix and cracking result...…. I have heat.

Part is very well machine and fitted in the top main hose.

Is this any better/worse than the r5 mod?

It could be worse than the R5 mod, as it's a good distance away from the head. This could allow the engine to get too hot, before the sensing bulb senses the coolant temperature and opens. If the stat has a small bleed hole, then it's probably ok, just more expensive.

Its working fine, temperature is bang on mid way on the gauge.
I got it as close to the engine as I could.
No idea what this R5 mod is...…..

Update on this.
It would seem that movi g the stat makes the engine run too hot.
Fans have been going into 'warp speed'.

Had three major overheating events and the last one had the joy of being protected by the boys in blue.
Car would cool in minutes to restart.
Supplier advised there was an air hole in the stat. Guess what, no there not!!.

So bit the bullet, garage last week put a new Landrover stat in, did the job in 4 hours and it's now right as rain.

No fans running, lower engine block temperature.

So my verdict, just fix it properly first time.

The R5 thermostat mod has been tried and tested by many people running the M47 engine. Unfortunately the in line stat you bought hasn't, which is the cause of your problems.

Fixing it correctly is the best option, but as it's only a short term fix, many simply choose the R5 mod.

The inline stat you fitted could have been faulty? or your original stat was not failing as much as you thought it was, air lock maybe, as above I have seen lots of these fitted and fitted quite a few myself, first time I have heard a report of over heating I suppose there is always a first tie for everything, did you test the stat once you removed it from the top hose ?

Just installed R5 mod after a winter of very little heat!
Most effective and value for money mod ever made!
£7 for R5 stat and a couple of jubilee clips, 30 mins fitting (30mm 1/2 socket is great aid to assist stat install with mallet), and it works!
See if it's all ok over the blistering hot summer we will hopefully have!
Reminds me, must get a/c checked as think lost all gas since recharge last summer! :(

OMG! the heater does work! First time ever the water temp needle has been above "8", constantly at "9" within 10 mins and from then after!
Best £7 ever spent! Will be interesting to see if MPG goes up now at designed running temp!
