Hi all, with the cold weather coming i thought i would check the coolant on a disco i bought a few months back, i have ended up draining the system as the coolant strength was low. The coolant coming out was rust coloured so i have flushed the system several times, the problems started when i tried to remove the plastic filler on the thermostat housing. It was siezed solid, it eventually snapped dropping pieces into the housing. Not a problem just removed the thermostat & retrieve the offending items, as i did this i dislodged a piece still in the housing & it fell into the head gallery, off with the housing & retrieve the little bleeder. I just need to ask two things, 1. is there an alternative to the plastic plug/filler on the thermostat housing, 2. ther is a drain in the cylinder block, can anybody tell me where it is.
Thanks Snoops :(

I belive you can use the brass plugs as used in household radiators.
as for the drain I dont know.

Like this, my radiator filling plug that's in my tool box just incase it is ever needed :)

The brass plugs of rads work really well as they have bleed screws on them so no need to undo the whole plug to bleed the system. And I believe the block bleed bung is just under the exhaust manifold toward the front of the engine. It is quite visible when you know where to look.

hiya, drain plug is between exhaust and dipstick tube (13mm), stand by passenger headlight and you'll see it.. it holds most of the coolant......!

This exact thing happened to me today. The thermostat plug sheared off clean. Even though I had the thermostat out while trying to get the remaining plug out, some of it still went down into the head. I have air-con on my disco, so the pump needed to come off to get access to the lower left (as you look at the engine) bolt on the thermostat housing. Once I figured this out it all went swimingly. :D
