Hi folks

Picked my 90 defender 200tdi up a week ago from Birmingham.
Drove it 460mile back home to n.e Scotland
The temp guage didn't budge a bit and no heat through heaters
Purchased a thermostat and went to replace, somebody had ripped the internals out the old one, since fitting the thermostat the guage hovers just under the boiling point on long runs, did 200mile towing with it like this, it's never actually went into the red but not comfy keeping an eye on it all the time

Is this normal ?

Cheers

Is it a conversion if so gauge and sender may not be matched:)

Worth a punt I guess
Seems to be taking an age to heat up and when left sitting for a while and started up again it hovers on the half then up to the hot pretty quick again

Mine does that but I have a miss match with gauge and sender, bought an aftermarket set that shows the temp in numbers:)

When hot carefully remove radiator cap if cap ok should be some pressure released.
With cap of run engine should be able to see a good flow of water being circulated through thermostat if not water pump could be duff.
If good flow take grill off and feel radiator all sections should be warm if not radiator needs a flush out.

i had the same issue, though mine was a conversion and the guage and sender missmatch. What let me know that was. . touching the heater hose when the guage was pegged. and realising that though it was hot, it was not boiling hot . . .

I would replace the temp sensor just incase some has replaced it previously with a disc sensor. Happened to me, changed for correct sensor and bingo.
