Hey All :)

I have a massive problem with wheel wobble, just fitted some defender alloys with general grabber tires onto my 1989 90, they look great, but the first time I drove it I got a wheel wobble at 30 mph+ so I got the wheels balanced and they felt great for a few days until 50 mph+ and its the worst i've ever experienced.

I've checked panhard rod pushes and there is no visible play. and the nuts are FT

Would I need to get the wheels balanced again for hi speed? or is there something more sinister going on?

I really dont want to change back to landie steels, :(

You might need to do a bit of wheel fettleing to get alloys to fit on early 90 hubs, but not sure how much. I'm sure one of the guys with an early 90 wil have an exact answer, any second now..........

have you checked your tie rod end ball joints and the idler arm from the steering box and steering damper. When was the last time you had a front end alignment?

ill second thors checks. i had the same problem an it turned out i had to replace all my balljoints on the front end. on the drop arm, and the track rods. is there any play in the steering wheel?

Its not that you have drums on the back and the wheel wont fit flat against them is it? Later defenders have rear discs so later wheels are not a good fit on a drum.

i want steels ! wanna get rid of the stupid disco alloys i have on !

To be honest never since ive had it, been too busy sorting out engine issues and MOT stuff I havnt really though about it,

I will check all those things tomorrow, the steering wheel does sit off center and there is alot of play in the column which I just put down to steering UJs.

maybe the l weights on the wheels have been put on wrong when balencing them for the tyres. this one time at band camp there was a clump of mud on the inside of my rim an it was shaking my 90 like crazy, quick jetwash fixed the problem.

I put disco alloys on my 1987 90. Had to use 30mm spacers an fettle a bit on the wheel. If they dont sit right then you have problems

I had the same problem with a set of smiths alloys it was because they were not seated, if you remove the wheel and look in the inside of the wheel you will see the mark the hub has left, one way is to fit spacers or do what I did and buy a cutting burr and bit by bit cut the alloy from the centre of the wheel. Mine now fit and run very well after balance

SOLVED!,

Where the wheel sits on the hub its rusty and covered in ****. cleaned up the hub and the wheel was then able to sit properly, tonnes better to drive :)
