After much deliberation (whinging, arguing, dummy spitting, several fights, 2 arrests and a restraining order) it's been agreed to add a layer to the LZIR map for recommended professional mechanics.

The idea is to provide a pointer for folk whose Landies fall apart on their travels away from home in areas where we don't have local knowledge or contacts through normal LZIR volunteers, primarily abroad but also sparsely LZIR covered areas of the UK (eg the Highlands and Cornwall) and third world countries (Wales).

We can Google any old garage so what we are looking for is recommendations of those that have gone out of their way to help you out above and beyond the call of money.

Obviously we have no way of vetting recommendations so the map is only intended as a hopeful point of contact for those in dire need so landyzone, LZIR or individual members cannot be held responsible for the quality or cost of any work done..... or not henceforth and otherwise hereafter called 'the eejit' in perpetuity blah blah....

To reduce the risk of self marketing spam members need to have 100 constructive posts to put forward a contact for consideration at LZIR mods discretion.

If you think you have a candidate to go on the map tell us why below but don't include contact details or they will be deleted, we'll ask for them if they pass muster.

I'll add a link to the map when there's some on there and I remember how.

OK here is one I would recommend, Crown Grove garage in Kirkliston. It's run by a gentleman called Ashley whose great knowledge of Land Rovers came from assembling them in the Falklands for the MOD, OK probably Defenders, but has looked after my Freelander 1 extremely well.

Quick, get in another 20 posts, or incur the wrath of BB:eek:

is it worth suggesting JM, as he has had pretty good feedback?

I think most are happy to point folk in his direction when needed anyway so not sure he's needed on the map as such.

Happy to be persuaded otherwise, maybe an lzir mod conversation?

AJW Car and Commercial services, Lydney, Gloucestershire. Andy Wilson owns it. He works on any vehicle, from cars to HGV's. He has a contract for maintaining St Johns Ambulance fleet in the South West. He has a couple of recovery trucks and does 24HR recovery. He will try and fit anyone in at the drop of a hat and always does work on my LR90. He also does offroad rallying with a Land Rover so knows them pretty well.

Because of potential problems with recommending paid for services we're trying to keep it to areas where we haven't got direct contacts.

If someone comes a cropper in Glos and they need a garage I can look at the map and contact list.....phone myself and you up and ask if we know anywhere....type thing :)

No worries, delete mine if you like BB ;)

There is James Barrington in Brittany. he is based in the village of La Cheze near Loudeac in Department 56.
Well experienced, well equipped garage and has much experience in Africa keeping Landies running.
(I may have this wrong : James is a pro mechanic and runs a pro operation. I may have misunderstood the intention here, but if someone is short of help in this part of France, then the info could be useful to a holidaying member)

Ian Whitehair is in SE Cornwall and is a top Landy spanner-monkey (reasonable charges too). He's done lots of work on my vehicles.
Hick's Motors is just off the A38 between Liskeard and Bodmin. They have a very Landy-friendly MOT tester (my Son).

Ian Whitehair 4x4. He's fantastic and he was recommended to me by another LZ member down here. He's done all of the work on my 110 and he's ultra honest. If he discovers another issue he won't touch it until he's physically pointed it out to you.
He's happy working on all models of Land Rover and he's based in SE Cornwall just off A38.

In the highlands Fort William area you have got:
Edgars Auto ben nevis industrial estate main road inverness side of the of town he owns several land rovers and is really good.

You also have Clansman garage good reliable guys, they will sort your problem admitidally don't know the most about land rovers but fairly priced and they are the main MOT station in Fort William, going out towards Mallaig on the A830 and is on the road the left turn just before the swing bridge over the canal follow the road round and go up the sign posted turn off.

For Tyers and batteries go to MChonechy's are the best do not under any circumstances go to national tyres bunch of time wasters and a rip off.

ADJ Stevenson runs the local AA recovery contract so they will coming to get you.

Continuing further up the A82 there is the west end garage in fort Augustus never used them personally but the previous owner of my land rover did and said they were generally good.

Inverness there used to be portal rover but i think they closed a wee while a go after their supply of vehicles to the expendables movie other than that no one i know of in inverness.

Of course heading back down the road form Fort William towards Glasgow at Ballachulish you have got Chisholms recovery and garage when last i heard these guys had the RAC contract for the area so they will come and get you, they do a lot of the estates land rovers and are pretty good.

The famous Lix Toll garage in Killin very good service and always willing to help, also run a recovery service, to get to them from A82 take the A85 in Crianlarich, you have to go into the village not alone the new bypass that has been built.

In glasgow its self there is Monarch garage near Dalmarnock railway station on the A728 again friendly, helpful service when i was their looking to buy a land rover can't say much for their mechanics but they did have a few vehicles they had restored on side that were done to an exceptionally hight standard.

Auto parts suppliers:

B&H Autos Fort William and Oban good range and helpful staff don't understand that many parts for series land rovers are still used on new defenders but hey ho, for defenders and other land rovers if they don't have it in stock they can sometimes have it by the next day though may take longer as parts can take along time to turn up in Fort William as sometimes part suppliers won't bother until they can send a full van, this applies to the garages as well the majority of hold ups are created due to parts taking forever to turn up even if ordered on express delivery.

Lix toll also has a large parts department.

In inverness there is Davidson and McMillan who are land rover specillist part suppliers i have personally not used them agin but the last owner of my land rover said they were good to deal with.

I think this covers just about all their is in the vicinity of the A82. may not have the required number of posts but know all the mechanics on the list personally for at least 15 years and well qualified to tell you who the ee Jits are.
