Does it improve acceleration from standstill ie when you pull off do you get the power instantly or later in the rev range. When i pull off as prob the same as every other diesel p38 owner, theres a pause before the beast actually lunges into life. If i fit a powerbox will i get instant power from a standstill??

i've bought one recently, will be fitting it in the next week or so, bit stuck for time and decent weather on my day off !

Well i got the chip and i fitted it today and when i floor the gas pedal it goes like stink but chucks black smoke out the arse end, why is this??????????
 
black smoke is unburnt fuel - the chip basically over fuels the engine which gives you the increase in power, the unburnt fuel appears as black smoke when 'flooring' it.

Is there no setup instructions with the kit, no way to adjust the amount of power it adds??

Hi, fitted a different make powerbox to mine last year and as you now say " goes like stink " but mine gives off no smoke. Saying that the instructions to mine say it is adjustable by turning a small screw inside the box ? :eek:
 
It's possible your intercooler is a bit clogged up with oily sludge coming from the turbo and rocker cover breather. Cleaning that out might make a difference to its breathing and therefore the black smoke emissions.
 
I suppose it's possible but wouldn't it have smoked before i fitted the chip?
Won't hurt to take a look though.
 
Mine does exactly the same - the amount of smoke it chucks out makes it look like the battleship Potemkin steaming into port... Looks odd, but funny as hell when you've got a BMW convertible driven by a knob climbing all over your back bumper!

I'm going to clean out the intercooler at some stage - obviously when it gets warmer! I've been trying to source a spare intercooler, so I can get it clean and then just swap them over, but no joy as yet!

what can you use to clean out the intercooler?
 
as said before, its over-fuelling! you need to see if theres an adjuster or stepper inside as your just chucking fuel away. i have a totally different chip on mine and it computes at 20,000 times per sec ,constantly mapping the engine to my driving style and no smoke and im also saving on fuel, cleaning the intercooler will do it the world of good but i dont think it will stop your smoke untill your chip is set up right..

But there is no way of altering/ adjusting it. its a sealed box!:confused:
