Looking for advice, recommendations and information....

The ZF 5HP24 box, or probably more specifically the Torque Converter, in my 2003 L322 is really starting to struggle.

Droning and juddering is getting more frequent, esp. when warm, the tell-tale tacho needle is now noticeably 'bouncing' and some shifts are a tad harsher (although not jerky).

These photos show the state of the fluid at the last drain around 6 months ago, a bit of friction material is floating in the sump, although the oil didn't smell burnt. This oil had been in there for approximately 16 months when the photos were taken.

As we always say to newbies and new Range Rover owners, to keep some cash aside for repairs....well I now have enough aside for this job....but what would you guys recommend?

OPTION A:
Get a garage to rebuild the current box, fit it, plus new/refurbed torque converter.

OPTION B:
Get a garage to fit a remanufactured box and take mine as service exchange, plus a new/refurbed torque converter

OPTION C:
Fit a new/refurbed torque converter only, flush box and fit new filter

Which would you suggest , why and any recommendations on garages....willing to travel, but north of Lancashire would be pushing it.

When I was first thinking of the work about 18 months ago, K Motors in Preston had quite a bit of info on their website about the Range Rover gearboxes...this info is no longer available....are they still trading, and if so, do they still do 'boxes and what are peoples thoughts??

Whilst I have enough saved for either of the options....I would like to see some change, or not have to spend it all...!!!
 
I would have thought option B would be a better option than A, quicker turnaround probably cheaper too. Option C would be daft tbh, don't know how much damage has been done.

K Motors are still going but their main emphasis is now on spare part sales through their LRDirect website. Their automatic transmission repair guy went off on long-term sick leave but I understand that he has now setup on his own. K Motors therefore no longer do transmission repairs.

Option B is my preferred choice....but I'd also consider having my old box back to 'play' with....

Love to Andy, but the other half who holds purse strings dictates that whilst I am a competent spanner man, she would prefer (due to cost and criticality of the component) to get it done by a reputable garage who will guarantee/warranty their workmanship....

As above to Bix, I would consider having my old box back and play!
do you tow with the Range Rover? what mileage do you have on it?
Don't tow with her, but we do 'play' on some tame lanes, and she has covered just over 183k miles now.
 
I've just purchased an L322 02 on 88k miles (no tow bar fitted) and was thinking the first thing to do would be the gbox filter and new oil then run it for a few days and change the oil again

Good idea but it will still fail.

Thats fair comment mate, you would definitely enjoy having a root around in there without the pressure of getting it back in a time frame.

Sussex Autos reconditioned my TC and as Phil pointed out to me, it's a specialist job so that gives me confidence in them. On the side of them is the company below, they are literally next door so whether they are affiliated or not but you could ask. They were also recommended to me by a wise old mechanic that i know but apart from that i have no personal experience.

JPAT are always worth talking to as far as recommending somebody and i think they do the TC recon also, possibly one of the first to offer it if my brain is in gear.

You know i only generally talk to two people when it comes to the ZF box, and you are one of them:)

I think the torque converters are the weakest links, mine was vibrating quite badly at 108K in my 4.4 petrol 2004.
That's because it's a stupid design with a slipping clutch built in. Any friction device that slips is going to have a short life.

Is it worth talking to Ashcrofts? I rang and spoke to Paul or maybe it was Dave Ashcroft and he was very helpful even though he said he wouldn't do the work himself. Decent man.

I'm pretty sure Ashcrofts have more sense than to touch the GM autobox:rolleyes:
