5 18" pieces of sharpened angle iron with holes in the top and some d shackles and either rope or chain will do you as a ground anchor. Just hammer them into the ground in a V and rope or chain then together.

In 2006 my girlfriend and I went up to the lakes in my 88" SIII - no other vehicles - and drove the 'Walna Scar' (O.S. coordinates SD 289 970 to SD 240 968)trail and the 'Old Coach Road' (O.S. coordinates SD 380 219 to SD 316 231). We took minimal recovery equipment: High lift jack; Shovel; Tow rope; Chain. We didn't use any of them. I think that going laning in one vehicle adds to the adventure - I really can't see why so many people are anti solo-greenlaning - I've always thought that if the vehicle suffered an irrepairable breakdown or got very badly stuck, I'd just find a farmer and offer to pay him to pull me out.

The 'Old Coach Road' was a nice easy drive, but the 'Walna Scar' was terrifyingly amazing. I think that the 'Walna Scar' has been closed to vehicles now though, but it's just as much fun on a mountain bike. If it is still open, then starting from the Western end and going to the top of the pass is an easy drive with fantastic views.

Does anybody know if Walna Scar is still opento vehicles?

tar fenby. thats wot i wos after. anething i can do for you give me a shout. within reason, i dont like boots cleen

shame i carnt go all the way over it naw iv a moor capable vehical

Well I am not anti solo for greenlaning but even the locals are the ones that catches you out.

I have many friends, who have called me at stupid o'clock before because they have decided to go on their own. These are also experienced and have been stuck for many hours due to lack off phone signals and digging their way out of the shiiiiit.

I would say if you wanna go on your own do so but dont take peps with you and and go in one vehicle you are just asking for trouble.

If you are looking for challenges for the future I would at least get a decent winch that could pull you out of the shiitte rather than a hand held !!!

im simpley not rich enough to get a electric winch. one day though. untill then i will have to just dig. im young and fit he he

The problem here is that you're not going to be on your own. You are not risking just your own good health. None of us would critisize the courage of those people who challenge themselves to the limit but to challenge yourself and then make your friends gamble on your success is not simply irresposible, it is selfish and dangerous.

If you must take such risks then do them alone. Whatever else happens, do not go laning alone on unknown lanes with people who couldn't even walk themselves out of trouble.

i comentid my self that it would be foolish to endanger the day of the kids and my plump frend. thay wure removed from the equasion on the firs page.

I should adjust my observations since I had not noticed that you removed your passengers from the equation previously.

If your preference is to meet these challenges alone, then I can not critisize you since you are endangering no one else. Don't get me wrong I still think you're bloody mad!

I would remind you of a couple of things though... green lanes are not meant to be extreme challenges. Occasionally they may geta little soft but if they are really bad then (without wanting to sound like a ****) you really shouldn't be driving them. The second thing is quite simply that there enough green laners around the country that wherever you go it should be possible, with a small amount of planning, to make sure that you have phone numbers for local laners who have the necessary equipment to get you out of trouble. Of course that may not be a winch or bridging ladders, but a fanbelt or gallon of water!

The number one rule about not going out alone (with a few exceptions) is probably the best safety advice anyone is ever gonna give you.
