Ive been looking for decent Defender for a good while now and online its full of the same people selling the same kind of stuff... cleaned, refurbed and over priced....

On a previous post I highlighted my suspicion about milage and was informed not to worry about high milage as such and the reasons why...

However... I would like to ask those who know alot more than me what the effects of towing have on a Defender... Lets assume I have overcome my fear of purchasing a Defender with such high milage... I would like to know how much of an impact does towing have on the Defender 90.

If I was to purchase a TDi 90, one owner from new, no towing ever, never used in extreme off road, full service history and reguarly serviced we could say that this example was 100% perfect...

Compared to say a TDi 90, one owner from new, towing cows everyday 100's of miles, full service history, regularly serviced... how perfect would this example be??

Its obvously not 100% perfect compared to the first example so is it only half as good?? no effect at all ??? Im intruiged to what people will answer.

Thanks everyone.

It all depends on the way you drive/previous owner has diven it. You'll be best off finding some defenders that are local to you and having a test drive, good look round and also get a mechanics opinion!! Anyone can say how good there car is online. But remember there will always be something wrong when buying a defender.

Dont do a lot of towing but i would say..............................

You really do think/worry/analyse too much. Its a land rover, its designed to be a workhorse and yes a one owner mint example that had never done a hard days work will fetch a better premium (if you can prove it)

If you worry about things like that, a Landy probably isn't the most suitable vehicle for you. Many, if not most people who own old Defenders spend a lot of time repairing them and often rebuilding them completely.

I appreciate by the sounds of my continuous scrutiny, suspicion and questioning that I sound like the wrong person for a Defender... yet Im merely finding out what to look out for... So far my money is still in my pocket thanks to some good bits of advice that this site and other forums have made me aware of....

I appreciate all of your help guys and soon my own defender repairs will begin....

Have you thought about getting a discovery.

Much quieter, heaters work, better cruising speed and you wouldnt have to worry about every knock and rattle (defenders have lots of them)

dun't try an palm him off on us lot  he wants a fender an that's that :p

Im not gonna be too worried about every knock and rattle... just ensuring I dont fall foul and spend my hard earned savings on a potential cut and shut ringer, a rust bucket, something overclocked or a serious load lugger...

Im also considering if I may have to return with a new id for this forum when I eventually pluck up the courage to spend my money on a defender and then have to bring my pictures for all to see....

Cant wait to take it off road with you guys too.....

:rolly:

If you find some you like the look of, post the links and see what folks say,

If you find one you really want to view, take someone with you who knows landies.............................

I reckon Bobbler's your man :p:p:p

How much mechanical knowledge do you have?

I dont proffess to have much mechanical knowledge... I got plenty enthusism though... and as I have wanted a Defender since I was young Im sure I will enjoy the journey for all it brings both good and bad... at least with this forums help I wont have rushed out and bought a rust bucket just because it looked great!!!

You sound like a range rover driver too me... :D
I think every defender over 10 years old are like triggers broom anyway....
