removed the complete propshaft and the noise is still there like a cv joint or wheel bearing but cant see anything obvious , wheels seem to be ok no play in them, can the ird unit be removed completely and could this be the cause ?

I hope that you wont start any more threads to solve this problem.
Is it just a noise or is there vibration travelling through the vehicle?
It would be useful if you just stuck to one thread, try to describe the noise, any associated vibrations and does it effect handling?

how long have you owned the vehicle?sounds like sumthing is loose, but the description you gave is a bit vague.
Is it a constant banging?
You seem to think its coming from the ird have you checked the level,by removing the top nut and topping up with 75w 90 I think, tranny fluid.might be worth draining it before even considering removing it,the bottom nut is magnetic to catch ferrous bits.
You will need to invest in a 15mm and a 21mm copper washer if you decide to drain and refill.
Keep in mind I'ma carpenter not a mechanic,so wtf do I know?..but if you can give a good description ofyour symptoms, someone here will have a good idea how to solve your troubles.

check the inner cv on the front drive shafts, grab the shaft and try pulling up and down on it if theres any movement that could be the cause

make sure you can undo the filler/ level plug before you drain it.

I knackered the filler nut once, completely rounded it and ended up torching a 17mm and whacking it onto the rounded 19mm,while it was still red hot.
It is most likely his drive shafts as far as I can tell from this distance, but I read a thread from a few years ago and some one recommended changing his drive shafts. The guy changed his drive shafts which didn't cure anything.I cant remember what turned out to be the solution/problem...I might search for a while later. :bolt:

jacked one side up with just front wheel driving and clunking noise still there tried this on both sides and it is the same, thought the drivers side was a bit noisier sounds like bearings loose

have it sitting on axle stands and when i put it ithe the higher gear its like a bag of spanners so gear box or ird

yeah went through the gears first was like a clunking second and third rattled like a bag of broken bearings

took prop front end out of ird unit, its in bits, the crown wheel in the unit has lost a couple of teeth as well , made up a cover plate and left the prop off will it be ok like this , and any tips getting filler plug out , its solid , cant budge the bloody thing how much oil do they hold

Your ird holds 1.1l of 75w90 specification API GL5
rear diff takes 0.83l of80w90 api GL5.
Don't know what engine you've got gearbox oil differs, all the info is written in the haynes bible, but it states 10w 40 for the manual gearbox ,I rang the dealers, spoke to a mechanic there,he reckoned it should be 75w80/75w90 semi synth.
I dont know what you mean by the crown wheel?
It takes perseverance to remove that filler nut,if youve already rounded it heat an 18mm socket till its nearly red hot,get a 9" extension onto it quick as you can and tap it onto the nut, order a new one first, you'll also need a 21mm copper washer.

I messed up my filler nut so bad I had to use a red hot 17mm socket to get a hold on it.I hope this crap I've typed helps you out somehow.

Be careful using those axle stands,I was in my parents house last week, saw a lidle leaflet pair of axle stands for a tenner. My mother who is a nurse told me horror stories of guys who came into a&e,because of axle stands folding. Also was going to buy some years ago from a trusted auto factor, the guy told me id be much better off with concrete blocks and wood.

i got one of those rave mans on disc on ebay and it didnt say what oil i needed; as for the axle stands we had the front wheels clear for testing all was ok then we got under to try and get the filler plug out after a lot of grunting and hammering we gave up and got out from underneath and my mate was looking at the front wheels ,they were on the ground he thought i dropped the stands down a notch , and when we looked under one of them was folding so like you say horror story , never again , its going to be the cement blocksfom now on, anyway thanks for everything so far
