".....A new hope........so, after getting it all sorted i took it for a run to Birmingham (126 miles) on which it settled down nicely. The Lpg works as it should and the engine is silky smooth with loads of tickle the throttle power. All in all i am really pleased with the new engine, the fitting of which gave me chance to sort out the other leaks and niggles.......can't wait for it to be run in....."
So we get in the car to drive my Mothers for a jolly, planning to stop in a M&M 4x4 to pick up a couple of wheel centres.

After 300yds the power drops off, the car begins to misfire.....it gets slower and slower at which point i give up and coast to a stop....splutter...splutter..cough..silence!!!!!

:doh::doh::doh::doh::doh::doh:

Not best chuffed i can tell you.......enter the Rac, a quick tow home, a wtf! from my friend Alan who has helped with lots and then a scrabble around underneath and a glowing cat...it turns out that the cat has collapsed on bank 1-7....1 day after the mot and 126 odd miles after fitting the brand spanking new engine......

Not the end of the world so the next episode will be?

Revenge of the owner........which involves one grinder, two cats, some exhaust tube, a welder and a later date with a new set of catalytic converters.
My only saving grace is that it went after the MOT:):)...

....The cats are off.....had to cut both rear exhaust bolts as they seized, rusted and virtually grown into one object....would they shear, would they bugger!

.........as soon as i cut the cats out we will have a gentle look inside.........

Could you visually see/feel that the cat had colapsed? Often a glowing cat is the sign of a weak fuel mixture.

....hmmm, every cat that i have had that has collapsed/failed moved/blocked the outlet has done the same, and it is rattling around like er....a rattly thing inside the exhaust...and much to the neighbours annoyance it now runs fine without the exhaust attached whereas before it wouldn't run ok after the first 2-3 seconds.

I reset the adaptives before i started the new engine so it should be fine unless there is a fault with one or more componentsof the ems....which of course there could be but i am sure that it is just a failed cat.....but i will check when i get it running again.

Cheers, Nick.

Removing the cat and checking how it runs is a good way of checking for a blockage. The fact that it's rattling and 'blocking' in just 3 seconds also points the way of a knackered cat in your case.:)

...i gutted the cats once (cue calls rom the RSPCA) on my p38 and it sounded rubbish, like it was blowing even though it wasn't...to be honest part of it is my curiosity.

My d1 came with its cats removed and we make it through the MOT each year ok. The D2 still has them on but if they fail I'll do without since they are not really needed on LPG.

....my old p38 always used to pass without them but from info that i had read and heard i though if they were fitted when built they had to have them fitted?

The latest mot pass came back with a specific form for lpg vehicles......which it passed with no trouble, , on which it says it's a form for lpg powered vehicles, with no reference to petrol at all...

Guys,

I think you will find that unless the engine is in a bad way you don't need the cat to pass an MOT ( only claw back on this is the MOT tester being a right ars*).

All my cars should have cats none do and I have never had any problems.
Disco 2 TD5 Auto ( de-cat buy a 2001 front pipe)
Wifes Subaru WRX (full decat up pipe the lot in S?S) does not even get to half the limit.
Subaru GC8 RA Rally car ( resonator box that is it. 100 db Mines ECU) no problems.
Sons honda civic 1.6 ( full s/s system ) no problems

The one that made the biggest improvement was the Disco it was a different beast.

Get rid of the restrictive piles of crap

...they are sooooo on the floor! welding as we speak!!! (cleverly)

It has collapsed, neatly shaped to fit the exit of the cat!

Nick.

The one on my disco had to blocked but detached in side and was ringing like a bell. I do hear more turbo noise but not as bad as the bell:)

If you are that bothered about the noise get a decible insert for the exhaust.
Wife rips past the cops in her subaru and they don't bother her. the same cops will pull the young spotties and have a go.
