Hopefully just the switch but don't be alarmed if it needs sensors. Easy job once you get stuck in. Watch where you get them though as the prices vary. Best to get the part No and use ebay. The older model ones are quite cheap now but 2001 on are dearer.

Fixed mine tonight, Checked brake lights again tonight and realised they don't work every time,
so I took out brake switch photo (2).JPG, prised it open a bit photo (3).JPGwith an electrical screwdriver, sprayed some brake cleaner and then some WD40 (it's all I could find)
Refitted it then took car for a good 15 mile drive around country roads so I had to use brakes a lot,
Lights still came on for the first couple of miles but not as much also brake light still not working every time,
then the wd40 must have done it's job by then as brake light worked every time and NO 3 AMIGO'S,
Will keep an eye out for it and will probably need a new switch eventually

Hi guys , I've had the 3 Amigos for a few months now , after reading another thread here about VCU this evening I decided to engage the HDC to see what happens ............... Nothing ! no green light to say it has been engaged . Am I missing the obvious ie. It won't engage because the warning light is on or could the HDC wiring be my first port of call to resolve the three amigos ??

It's all linked, check brake lights first and if they are working, most likely as described. HDC won't engage if it knows it won't work if it's not getting signals from all four wheels.

Cheers .. I've got a few days off work , weather permitting I'll get out and check the usual suspects ...
thankies

Hi Guys

I have also got a 2001 TD4, bought second hand some years ago, and not used too often. The car has also had the 3 amigos problem, but with a slightly different slant. I have spent ages in Freelander forums finding information and now have some understanding of the possible causes, and the possible costs involved.

If the car is driven for a few miles, between 10 to 15, and then the engine stpopped and restarted, all the lights go out and stay out for the rest of the journey. As the problem seems to solve itself after a few miles I suspect that there is not a permanent failure on one of the contributing components so at this stage I have not yet started stripping or replacing components until I know the actual problem

The Twist - At the same time that the lights are on, the speedo and airconditioner also do not work. I can appreciate the speedo problem as I understand that a signal from one of the ABS sensors drives the speedo and the odometer, but don't get the link to the aircon, unless it is a coincidence.

I live in South Africa where temperatures are slightly higher than in the UK and wonder if this may be a contributing factor to the 3 Amigo problems

Any thoughts
