Hi all
Have had my td5 for approx 3 weeks, and yesterday, out of curiosity i tried to put the transfer box Low, but it wouldnt engage!!!!

Looking at all the service history that the car came with, i would say it has never been driven on grass, let alone off road, so i wonder if it s seized????????do they seize???

cheers

Yes they do.... but what do u mean didnt engage? ... the lever goes forward to the limit and the car doesnt move, or the lever doesnt go into Low position?

Is your car an autobox model? Did you know that you need to have the autobox selector in 'N' before you can move the hi-lo selector?

hiya
i couldnt get the lever into Low, but maybe i should have read the handbook first, as thebiglad is spot on in that it has to be in N first!!!!!!!!!!!
Im gonna go try it now!

Laugh out loud funny that !!!!

Hey Dave

As you can probably gather, im very new to Land Rovers, bought one as Mrs had a big accident with a deer in my old car which was a Jag, and this together with now owning a caravan, i wanted not only the best towing vehicle i could buy, but also something that was safer.
So here i am. Probably ask some more weird and wonderful questions in the future, but please make allowances!!!!!!!!!!
Im ok on old VW's, 71 beetle and 75 camper, but these beasts are a different ball game>

Many thanks fella

Graeme

No Probs at all buddy Ask away. So if I understand correctly you have a TD5 auto, recently purchased.

If I may offer you some advice? this is what I do when I get another TD5 (I've had a few!!!);

1. These cars benefit more than normal from really regular servicing so irrespective of what I've been told about it's servicing, I always go through it from front to back, just to establish a 'known base line'.

These means changing engine oil with both filters, auto box oil (twice) inc filter, transfer box oil, and both diffs. Also fuel and air filters.

Then change brake fluid using the ABS pump. Also change the coolant inc the thermostat.

2. Modifications: De-EGR - these engines have an EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) system which frankly, is rubbish and needs removing. Cleaner running and better mpg will ensue.

If your TD5 is post 2001 the De-cat is the way to go. Don't worry about the details of these mods, they can come later.

3. If you are towing heavy loads, bear in mind that on TD5 auto, the torque converter locks up in 3rd gear, as well as 4th, which is particularly helpful when towing in hilly country.

4. A remap helps the TD5 auto enormously and is probably the best £250 you will spend.

Hope that helps, enjoy your Disco

Cheers

Thats great fella, thankyou very much for the advice and tips, i will do what you recommend. Makes sense and if makes the Disco runs all the better and longer for it, then happy days.

Will have a look at those Mods you suggest but i guess better to get the oils and filters done first eh?

The remap - is that a power upgrade? At the moment im not sure if im gonna use it for off roading? never say never, but i do want to have a go on one of these 'experiences', so hoping that will change my mind???

Anyway, thanx again fella
cheers
