Morning all

This might seem a stupid question, but how do I check if 4 wheel drive is actually working when the yellow selector is down?

Completely new to land rovers (as you may have guessed!)

Cheers

Jack up one front and one rear wheel so they are both clear of the ground at the same time. Start the engine and select a gear. If they both spin then it's working as drive goes via the path of least resistance.if you have free wheeling hubs fitted they will need to be engaged. This is assuming you don't have cross axle diff locks.

You can always just engage then try and drive in a tight circle on tarmac, if it judders and wiggles then its in 4wd!

You could go somewhere muddy in 2 wheel drive and and if you get stuck when you select 4wd it's not working.;)

Hi all,

Right, finally got out to play today! Jacked up a front wheel, selected 4wd put intro gear and ....... the wheel spins with little effort. Tried both sides and both the same.

Looked underneath whilst the yellow lever was being pressed down and the lever seems to move fine.

I am not sure if the fWH are working ok, but both selected to 4wd.

Any ideas where to go first?

Cheers

they will spin if 2 front wheels are up ,but if it spins with one up see if front prop rotates as you turn wheel if it does 4wd isnt engaged, if it doesnt turn your f/w hubs arent locking

1. Jack one front wheel up, with both FWH engaged, does the front prop turn when the wheel is turned, now jack up the other side and retest..only lift one wheel at a time (if you can, hold the prop with one hand and turn the wheel with the other, to make sure the FWH is engaged).

2. With just one front wheel lifted, pull the Hi/Lo lever back into Low Ratio Position (FWH locked in 4x4) can the wheel be turned???

3..Then return the Hi/Lo lever to its normal position and try again, Fwd should dis-engage and the wheel should turn, you may have to rock the wheel to disengage the FWD.

4. Now push the yellow knob down and you should be back in Hi Ratio 4 wheel drive, recheck if the lifted front wheel turns or is locked in FWD??

Ok, looks like 4wd deffo isn't engaging in either hi or low range.Prop shaft not turning when the wheel is rotated on either side (one up at a time).

Any good ideas on where to go o first?

Cheers for the replies.

Ahh hang on, the prop is not rotating in any situation.... will that lead to the hubs being suspect?

I can feel a visit to ebay coming on to get a set of standards!

Can someone tell me what I need to search for in order to replace the FWH with original bits? All I am finding is replacement FWH's lol

Jack up one wheel, pull the HI/LO lever back into the Low Position, now turn the prop by hand, does it turn or is it locked in place with a bit of movement (1/2 Turn)???
