Ive put a new thermostat in and a new etal impellored water pump.
She idles ok,sits 12 o'clock. take her down the road half a mile and up she goes, top of white, red, red and red light. Pull over rev at 2200 and she'll come down to 12 o'clock.
Thing is the engine isnt overly hot. Bottom rad hose is hot ,top hose cool Viscous fan (new) isnt howling and radiator is ok to hold.
Question Id like to ask is ,could it be the temp gauge ,temp sender?
Is there any easy way with a basic multimeter that it can be checked with?
Thanks
oh 1996 plate 2.5 diesel, manual just bought her

Alternatively could it be the head gasket?

Ive checked the voltage on the battery with the engine running and it's 14.05

did the new thermostat have a small hole/bleed nipple in it if not you can get air locks, the diesels have both rad hoses at top of rad and rad should have a baffle in middle of rad top hope this helps.

Was it doing this before you put the new parts on?why did you put new parts on,was it overheating?

New thermostat with a ball bearing vent fitted it into the recess of the top plastic thermostat cover.
Checked the rad with the marble test,in my case a small round apple then a cherry, didnt go from one side to the other so baffle must be fitted. Even put a light in the one port and couldnt see any light coming through
my bottom hose so to speak is the one on the right standing in front looking back
Rad is even temp all over

oh forgot to say when she goes right over in the red and the red light comes on,the eas lifts to hogh?

Now that's odd......that is really odd!!!

The bottom hose is on the left (drivers side in other words) looking back not right.

Is the RAD hot all over? Otherwise maybe it's an airlock, do have flow out of the small pipe from the top of the RAD into the expansion tank?

The bottom hose (left one) should be hot, this tells you the thermostat is opening at the correct temp. If it's cool even when upto temp I'd suspect a duff thermostat.
