My first post with my first Freelander so please be gentle!

Anywho, I have a problem with the cooling system on my 2004 1.8 3dr Petrol. Sometimes (not always), the temperature gauge hovers around the middle, but then may shoot up right to the red causing the little red light to come on.

Thing is, the engine is not overheating - it still runs fine and doesn't feel hot or anything (even going so much as 60-odd miles with the light on).

I'm told it may just be the temperature sensor. Can anyone vouch for this if they have had the same problem, or does anyone know of anything similar and how I could get it running normally?

Thanks in advance!

I strongly suspect it a faulty 'Burn it' sensor......it should stay in the red all the time :p

Cheers for the reply!

Not being funny though, but a quick Google search brings nothing up for 'Burn it' sensor? What is it exactly? Sorry - I'm handy with cars but know absolutely nothing about this kind of stuff.

Also, what do you mean by "it should stay in the red all the time"? Surely it shouldn't, as that would indicate overheating drastically?!

He's winding you up with the "Burn It" comment!!
They memders on here who are jealous of us Freelander owners always suggest Burning them for the tiniest fault !!
Back to your car, are the cooling fans running?

Haha, yeah I kinda got that now after looking through this forum. There are those who want to help and those who want to wind up. I'm up for a laugh but I'm a bit worried about cooking my car so...

I ran it idle this morning for a while, and the fans kicked in about half way on the temperature gauge. This would suggest to me that the cooling system is working the way it should, no? I've been reading into this and it appears to be quite a common fault, with most people suggesting it only happens at higher speeds (50mph+). This would certainly fit the problem I'm having as I only noticed it last night on the motorway drive home!

So yeah, I do think it's the temperature sensor. Anyone know how difficult it is to fit one, and part number I need (Freelander 2004 1.8 S)? Cheers! :)
