If the auto gearbox wont pull away and accelerate in Drive, but will do in manual mode, then the physical gearbox itself is working ok if its shifting up manually as you request it. The only difference is your making the decision when to change gear yerself as opposed to the car making the choice.
If the accelerator pedal sensor is at fault intermittently then you would expect the car to sense this. There will be a reading on the diagnostic of its position. Measured as a voltage or % of travel or both. Both usually. A garage could monitor this while taking it for a drive.
When the fault happens pump the accellerator pedal to see if the engine revs respond. Do it in Drive and Neutral. If the revs don't increase when in Neutral then this rules out the gearbox by process of elimination.
There is always shared parts across a range of vehicles. It keeps the cost down. It would be daft not to.
