hello,i have a 1996 4.0 range,i find the temperature guage needle never goes past the blue,so i take it engine running cold as uses way too much fuel.also i have some heat coming through vents on passenger side but cold on the drivers, thats with both set at high.i have tried another heater control panel but still no heat, would there be a problem with sensors?i am new to forum and only had the p38 for just over a month,so any help would be much appreciated!

The guage sensor is seperate to the engine management coolant temp sensor so this wont affect the running if its just a sensor issue, but you still need to check if the engine is actually getting up to running temp. If its not then you've likely got a stuck thermostat.

the difference in air temp between both sides of the car when set at the same temp is likely down to blend motors. Is the book symbol showing on the HEVAC display?

hi,many thanks for advice.yes the book sign is displayed on hevak, what would that indicate?i was going to look at thermostat and see if there is one in it.thanks for help, paul

to start off, you can not run with no stat. your stat is in its own plastic heart, type thing on the bottom hose out of your rad. cost of new one around £20..

thanks.i had been told stat was in a housing top of engine, near starter motor.i shall have to look at what you say,is it in a black plastic housing?thanks for help.

Thats why you are getting different temperatures between driver and passenger. The book symbol indicates a fault in the HEVAC. With the symptoms you are describing its likely you have a stuck blend motor. Very common fault. Well documented, if tiresome, repair instructions on here and rangerover.net

The 'stat on it's own is non-replaceable. You have to buy the complete "Heart" as you describe it. As others have posted, around £20.
Whilst you are at it, and with winter coming, flush the system through and refill with 50/50 mix of QUALITY anti freeze and preferably, soft water.

Perrier would be the ultimate, style wise !!!
Joking apart, de-ionised water, water from Birmingham, mid Wales or any other source where it is drawn from a sandstone based area would be preferable. You could also use CLEAN rainwater from a Butt, which would also be o.k.
Limestone based (Hard water), water and aluminium engines don't get on together very well, just look inside your kettle to see the effects.
You could of course buy ready mixed 50/50 coolant.

isn't mineral water in bottles called that precisely because of the minerals? for example that's why its not recommended for mixing infant formula (ask me how i know!). in my car i use distilled water which is cheaper than bottled anyway.

thanks to all who helped.i ordered a stat from partco, but at £3.60 i take it that it will not be the whole sealed heart unit?from your emails i see it should cost around £20.as being new to this site and p38s im most thankful for all your help guys:)

For £3.60 I would guess that they are just selling you the stat from a range rover classic not the p38, you need to order the complete heart shaped stat as it is sealed so you will not be able to fit just the stat you have ordered. Do a search on eBay for p38 thermostat and they have plenty on there, I ordered one last week from p38spares.co.uk it was about £20 as others have said on here, there are also plenty of other people selling them for more if you are not careful!
