Hi guys

Should a defender 200tdi temp sender have a washer as I have recently bought one from paddocks ( blue box ) and it came with no washer and the old sender didn't have one either, just wondered if that's why my temp gauge tends to read around the hot mark

I can't see why a washer would make a difference in the temperature. The washers usually seals the sensor, you can easily test your coolant temperature from the rad for metering accuracy.

This probably sounds like I dumb question, but is the engine a proper Defender engine? I have a Discovery 200Tdi in my 110 and the temp sender displays the temp as just above the red. AFAIK the thermostat housing is different on a Defender and Disco engine as so is the temp sender, so for me to fit a proper sender that matches the gauage I would have to either change the housing or get a coupler to fit the correct sender. But I can live with the temp reading hot as I know it's fine.

As for the question about the washer, mine has a washer on it, and I have the old temp sender (the Defender one that no longer fits the engine) and this also had a washer. But as said above I don't think it really matters if it has one or not.

i just bought a genuine from land rover for a 200tdi defender and the one that came out had no washer and the new one had no washer,

Right ok and no its a defender 200tdi engine, we gave it a run today after me doing the timing belt inc new thermostat as there wasn't one and replace the temp sender and water pump and the gauge just reads the same just above the start of the red but the heater works better now and is nice and toasty.

I will try ordering a sender kit from steve parkers and see if that sorts it

Sorry I refuring to tetsu0san for the disco engine. Am not sure why yours is reading hot then. It's got defender gauges with a defender 200 sender in a defender engine I've honestly no idea..

think disco is fine, fender coarse.. if so then again i think you can use ERC9432 adapter

I think you are right, as the Discovery sender I have is certainly different to the TD one I have. The adapter is one options, replacing the whole thermostat assembly is another. Although people have talked about the fact that you can just fit a TD or a N/A one straight into a Discovery housing, but I don't think that is right. However, it's Newbury in a few weeks time so hopefully I will be able to get what I want from there.

If your sender/guage combo reads high you can wire in an adjustable resistor and adjust to suit

i was thinking that last night. anyone tried it to make sure it still is accurate at the top end?

Can"t see it'd be an issue. Just set it to read accurate at the top, doesn't matter too much about the rest because you just need to know where it normally sits.....not whether its pointing dead on 'N'

Good luck to you and your blue boxed sender unit. I went through three of these in less than three years. I changed brand in the end and have not had a problem since. No washer.
