Hi, Ive got a 96 Defender 90. Driving around up to 50 temp guage is at half way point or just above. On the motorway after about 20 mins at about 60 it begins to go up to the red and ends up just under it or touching it, staying at this level. Once off motorway it goes back down to about two thirds of the way up.
Work was required on the vehicle anyway and had a new rocker gasket and head gasket replaced. Also thermostat replaced and radiator flushed through.
Problem is still occurring. Felt black pipe going into radiator, hot but not so you cannot touch it.

Any ideas welcome on poss solution? could it be faulty wiring on temp guage or the cooling system somewhere is still not performing correctly when the vehicle is run consisently at a higher speed. Your help welcome.

feel rad all over core to see if its cooling all over the core surface where its cool it isnt cooling

Following the engine work, head gasket etc........Did you bleed the cooling system through the heater matrix and get all the air out? If not you could have an air lock. Try opening the heater valve to allow the water to recirculate and let the air out of the system....best done from cold to avoid hot water splash which could burn you.

It does sound like a blocked rad, but the temp sensors do go wonky. Best thing to do is after it goes towards the red , stop the engine remove the bleed screw on top of the thermostat and insert a thermostat and see what temp the engine really is. When the head gasket was changed was the head skimmed and pressure tested ?
I recommend finding out exactly what temp your engine is before you go any further. In the past I have had faulty temp sensors also had problems with the wiring to the gauge from the sensor to the gauge

I would go with either blocked rad or cooling fins corroded away. Take a look at the fins. I had one recently that the fins were doing nothing as they had rusted off!! At high power it did as you describe. I replaced the radiator and problem solved. Interesting it reappeared when I drowned it in the quarry and blocked the radiator solid with silt!!
