Had the same on my Discovery II TD5, loosing heat in cab and then engine overheat, changed waterpump and thermostat, but still loosing water, placed a PET in the evacuatehose on the expansiontank to monitor, and yes filled it up pretty quick, So I changed headgasket and you could see it looked bad, (240000km) now its running fine.

stat changed, water pump changed, head off and just got to wait for it skimming now but of course everywhere is closed!
 
Well got the disco back yesterday and touch wood all is well! New stat, new water pump, new head gasket with head skimmed and pressure tested. Also had to have come tappet caps put on too as for some strange reason, they were missing! Cheers for your help and advice guys!
 
Just been driving down the bypass and temp has shot in to red again and blowing cold air! Let it cool and set off back, temp stayed in the centre of the guage and warm air came in. Any ideas? Surely can't be head gasket so soon?
 
have you checked rad is hot all across as in efficent cooling by rad is most common cause of head gasket failure
 
Will gasket have gone again then you reckon? Just with it now staying as it was with warm airÂ…
 
I have noticed over the last couple of days that it's taking lOnger for the warm air to come when the engine is up to temp.
 
just a thought, have you checked the rate of flow through the rad ? making sure it is all free and no blocked vanes, also flow through the heater matrix, check for blockages obviously lack of hot air when engine is up to temp is lack of coolant, through either air lock, low coolant level or ???? yeah, do you have the viscous fan or electric kenlowes and are they on from startup ? worth a check ...

Sounds like thermostat the cooland in the engine is not circulating therefore its getting hot and not circulatig thru the heater core id say change the stat it cant hurt anyways its fairly cheap and fairly easy to do.
 
Would the stat go so soon? Not gone to red again since, still taking longer than normal to get heat into the cab but when it does, it's quite hot to the point that if it's blowing on my skin too long, it becomes uncomfortable.

Yea it's 300tdi on a 95 plate, not sure what type of gasket was fitted as I didnt do it.
 
Hi again mate, the reason for a stat is to take the water in the engine only up to normal operating temp and still warms up the heater matrix, once at the running temp, the stat is supposed to then open and engage the cooling system to maintain the temp at the required level, your engine hitting the red just once after fitting a new stat was probably initialising the stat which popped open, and now works as should and opening on cue, dont worry if it takes a little longer and the alls ok !! Good job you aint got a v8 rangerover, you would never have one eye off of the temp guage lol.

I topped the coolant up a little, don't know if I have actually lost any or if it was from releasing the header tank. Took it on my land last night, track is quite boggy and over a few hills so the engine would have had to have been doing some work and no problems, temp stayed norm! Baffles me! Ha!
 
i had this with my disco!!! it was head gasket on mine, but may be different to yours! if you remove the header tank cap does it squirt every where! it should a little then stop! mine was very pressurised because it was being pumped up with exhaust gas!! hope this helps! peoplr remove the thermostat to get better water flow, try a new stat and go from there! get back to me with results!
 
Right, it was fine for a bit but started again yesterday. Released header, bubbled and gargled was squished from radiator, looked and there is very little fins there :-S now I think there is an air lock as this morning, temp started to rise above and blowing cold, at the same point I was just coming to go up a slight incline, as I did, I got a blast of warm air and temp dropped, when I levelled out again, cold air came back and temp started to rise, would I be right in thinking this is an airlock?
 
Just happened again and there is the slightest of leak, just little bubbles from behind what looks like the bracket to which the water pump is bolted to.
