Another gauge problem!
My temp gauge went full tilt (way over to the right!) I diagnosed that it was the gauge had had bust, as I simply swapped sender wires to the fuel gauge and all was well.
I ordered an replacement from fleebay (only a £10nner) and have just fitted it.....but....it is not the same as my 93 200tdi. It has different connectors etc and a plastic screw back...I have worked out which wire is which and rewired it....problem is  (I know it works OK because I tested it on my fuel sender wire) it hardly moves up to the centre of the dial......I am guessing the gauge is off a TD5 or Puma? Do I need to change the sender unit to a td5 or Puma to match the dial...or throw it away and buy one suitable for a 93 200tdi?
thanks in advance as always

i would suggest you look into it further as your temp guage wont have the same sender as the fuel guage so using that to confirm your gauge is working aint the right thing to do..
it could be your temp sender,,temp guage, thermostat or summit more serious

have you been offroading lately?

No offroading. I had all the gauges out last weekend as I repainted my dashboard. I also replaced the bulbs and fixed on the bulb holders with glue as they were all bust. I dropped the temp gauge in my kitchen so am pretty sure the gauge Is knackered. Both the fuel and temp gauge work in the same way (I believed by the wiring diagram) by allowing the negative feed back to them via a resistor. A thermistor in the case the water temp and a potentiometer in the fuel case?

now you didnt mention that,,it was read that the guage just went into the red for no reason, not that you had dropped it on the floor:doh:..

just buy the correct guage or a sender to match the guage you have bought

Yes, should have mentioned that I dropped it! So a td5 sender is different to a 200tdi in the temperature voltage it sends? But the fitting is the same?

there are also two types of temp sensor. one for the computer is normally two pin and works different to a single wire sender. If you have fitted one of them you need to replace for a single wire plug type as well. see what happens when you earth out the signal wire of the gauge it should go into the red or blue depending on how the system operates

was the gauge working before? or have you just fitted a new td5 gauge and trying to get it to work?

Maybe differences between td5 gauges. i don't know never seen td5 removed.
