Hi chumblies,

I've just acquired my first ever Range Rover. A year 2000 DSE.

I sold my old Volvo V70 XC (1998) as we fancied going for a full bore 4x4! So, we thought we'd go for "The Best." I've only had it a fortnight and already had a nasty EAS experience on the M2. (Big Green is in car hospital as we speak)

The Feds were very kind and escorted me home at 25mph.

I was a devoted Volvo fan....please tell me I've done the right thing. After sixty thou in the Swede, I never had a peep.....and it was very, very fast and comfy and could do 95% of the main stream off road stuff.

The Volvo had more BHP and more Torque than the RR.......The RR has excellent comfort, a match for the Volvo but, please..............Tell me;

I haven't made a boo boo, I haven't made a boo boo, I haven't made a boo boo.....have I?

Can't offer reassurance yet but have just got a 300Tdi Disco to replace my last Volvo 940, so I know where you're coming from in terms of Swedish good points. I had a few 740 and 940 estates over the years, the latest needed tyres and exhaust for MoT, then blew the head (I think) just before it was due, and at 207K miles it was hardly worth fixing. Quick-ish, comfy, safe... good bodywork, nice interior, lots of storage. But... they all leaked oil from the rear crankshaft seal, all had fuel pump relays fail, got stuck on wet grass and the exhaust grounded on bumpy fields. They couldn't safely tow the weight of horses we have now. The Disco's turning circle will take some adjusting to, and it's more like driving the work's Transit than a car. Will take it for some off-road training to find out what it can safely manage before going anywhere wobbly though!

I too was a devoted Volvo driver for nearly 20 years, including a 240 bhp V70 with racing chassis tiptronic gear change and permanent 4WD. I had a nasty experience with an M reg Disco , but have recently bought a 1999 P38 DSE auto, and so far have not regretted it.
As I now live in deepest rural Tuscany where a lot of friends live in farmhouses at the end of long gravel drives which frequently get washed out by heavy rainfall from thunderstorms, the RR is the ideal vehicle.
Even her in doors prefers the P38, saying that it feels more luxurious, and that due to the upright seating position she doesn't get the low back ache she used to suffer after long journeys in the V70.
For myself being 6ft 4ins tall its also nice not to have my head brushing the roof lining, and not having to duck my head under the darkened strip at the top of the windscreen.
As long as you keep the servicing up to date, you'll have a reliable car.

Must say though I do have a Series III lightweight for any serious off roading, as her indoors likes to be able to get in and out of the car without gettng dirty, and we're usually on hose pipe bans here cos of the weather.

Just enjoy.

It would appear then, that the transition twixt Volvos and RRs is not uncommon; which is pleasing to know. At least no one is saying "Fool! You should have stuck to the Scandic tank."

Thanks Donald and Mayday

Alas, tis gone! The P38 let me down, literally, four times in ten weeks.

I needed something 'good' for work and the Rangey was too unreliable. Fortunately for me, the garage hadn't sold my old V70XC and I've got her back...Bliss.

The only trouble is, I loved the Rover. The Volvo is, by a country mile, better and has twice the mileage but Oh dear oh dear. Did I have a Friday bus or are Range rover truly dire?

I certainly wouldn't pick one to do a 'round the world' tour. That said, 'springing' it would have sorted out all the troubles. That defeats the object though, don't you think?

A lovely car but terminally RUBBISH!
