Hey everybody, I'm about to buy my first Series 2 and I'm looking into some books which I'll be needing for maintenance / restauration.

The S2 I want to buy is in pretty good shape, but I'm completely new to this, so I need a good reference. The question is which books are worth it? Below are a couple of titles I find interesting.

Land Rover 2, 2a, 3 Owner's Workshop Manual 1959-1983 Autobooks Team of Writers and Illustrators & Autobooks Team of Writers and Illustrators

Land Rover Series I-III Maurice Thurman

Land Rover Series I, Ii And Iii Restoration Manual Lindsay Porter (this seems very interesting since I want to strip the S2 this winter)

Land Rover Series II & IIA British Leyland Motors

Big thanks for your feedback!

The British Leyland one looks OK, the Haynes restoration manuals are alright, worth a read, but may be a bit simple if you are experienced with restoration.

I have a reprint Land Rover manual for my 90, got it from Brooklands books, it is excellent. :) I think they do them for series also.

They have a website, www.brooklands-books.com

Thanks for the tip! They do have a Series 2A RO manual and it's even a good 20 euros cheaper than the RO manual from British Leyland :)

I think I'll buy the Hayes restauration manual as well. I restaured once a Renault R4, but that's already 20 yrs ago...

And apart from that I'll be needing a seperate book for the engine as well I guess: it has a Mercedes 200D engine under the hood.

That is a very good manual, I had the original when I had my 2a, it goes into real detail about component rebuild, as they assumed a lot of the customers would be in Africa, and places with limited parts availability and workshop facilities.

Best of luck with that, don't know what to suggest about the Merc engine! My memory is that those are a very tough and simple engine, with a bit of luck you shouldn't need much except service data. :)

Right I know what to get then :)

As for the engine: I used to own a 240D and it was indeed a very straight forward engine. And built like for a tank, that's why I'm not too sad that the engine is not original. Should do the trick just fine.

Thanks for the feedback!
