I am sure this is a frequently asked question but I have failed to find the answer with site search.

I want a vehicle which will be my only car to do say 70 miles per week dual carriageway, 100 miles a week country pottering (school run etc) and crucially tow two biggish horses at the weekend. I had and loved a defender 90 but the kids need proper seats in the back and I can't handle the inconvenience of a 110. I can spend up to £20k and would be suspicious of anything asking less than £10k - I want a vehicle, not a project.

So: old shape td5 or new shape tdv6? Any advice gratefully received.
 
The new one if you're gonna spend circa 20k. I know a few people who have these for towing and they love em. Get one as new as possible with a good spec and FSH and you'll be sorted. Far better engine than the td5.

Is there any interesting sense in which a £20 000 Discovery is not a Discovery? Is there some fine print I missed? Does it say at the top of this page "Got yourself a Disco because it is such a heap of junk you would have to pay someone to take it off your hands? Get yourself in here!" Is a £20 000 vehicle posh?

It is a disco and a good one at that, very capable on and off road. That 2.7 diesel is one of the best around. If i was lucky enough to have the same amount to spend on a 4x4, it would be a late model disco or a late range rover. But for towing the disco has it all.
 
guess it would have been wrong to say the 200tdi or 300tdi is better than both of them for relialbility.....
 
Life is so unfair... I had to pay RM70,000 (£12,700) for my yr2000 TD5 and a TDV6 when new is over RM300,000 (£54,500)...
 
As most of your driving is on the road and for towing, the disco 3 is the obvious choice for your budget. It is far superior on road and very capable off road (i've seen one of these in action and they can go just about anywhere). Prices are very good as well and there a re loads out there. Go for a medium spec, low miles, full history and warranty.
 
well i hate to upset the apple cart, but the disco3 is not as good as the td5 for towing, it is more powerful but eats fuel at an alarming rate, the offroad capability is not as good largely down to the fact that with independant suspension when the wheels are up the diff is down, nuttalls bosses have loads of them hired from shs 4x4 on the bank raising jobs round these parts and they hate them allways having to get towed by the lesser mortals in defenders and td5s so my advise is very low mileage td5.

I don't think he's after an off roader, more of a tow car. A friend of mine has a large show trailer, he used to tow it with a 7.5 ton lorry. He bought a disco 3 as a replacement and is really happy with it, he was really happy with how it tows. I think it's down to personal preference and what you want it to do. Budget allowing it would still be the disco 3.
 
The TD5 is brilliant but the TDV6 is the next generation. go for it I say, I would. I have gone from a 300tdi to a TD5 and loved it, I cannot believe that a TDV6 would not be the same stepup as what I have done. Its my next move later this year.
 
I think people are still getting used to the disco 3, land rover enthusiasts like the older discos and it'll take time for the new one to be accepted (a bit like the range rovers). As daily transport and as a tow vehicle the disco 3 and the new rangie is very hard to beat, i've seen both these cars pitted against the jap crap and they came out best every time. If you have the budget, why invest in an old model.

er...I disagree-WITH IT ALL!!!!

If I had £20k, well Id have a 110 double cab, BUT if I wanted a disco it would be a Disco 3. Although I am not fully aware of any major issues the D3 has, believe me, a D2 has plenty. If you can afford a newer car with hopefully less opportunity to go wrong as frequently as a TD5 then go for it.
Dont get me wrong-I love my TD5 to death but you gotta have patience & a very big stress ball...and if you want to keep hold of it, 80-130k miles in a TD5 tend to be the worst years of its life.
I used to detest D3's but, after reading about their capabilities & taken round a course in a G4 edition they are fantastic cars that will not only tow a horse box for hours in comfort but go almost anywhere you want it to off road.
Go get it-& ask me round for a go!:)
