I'm about to buy my first disco or first land rover for that matter..

I would just like some advice from some fellow landy owners...

I've got about £2-2.5k to spend so i know i'm not going to get anything too sparkly.

I'm torn between a mint 3dr J reg tdi200 with 120k on the clock or some higher mileage tdi200's (around 150k) or even a couple of tdi300's in my price range.. Typically i hate auto's, unless the disco is different?

Is there much different between the tdi200 and tdi300? I'm taking a disco enthuasist/mechanic with me too so hopefully i won't get a lemon!

If i've got to wait a few months and get a tdi300 then so be it, but i just wana know what the differences are and whether they are worth it. It's going to be used for bike racing events, hopefully to carry my kit, tow a bike trailer and provide enough room to sleep in overnight.. would also like to take it greenlaning a bit too.

Also any good places to look for a bargain?

Well, if nobody else is going to answer, I`ll impart the little knowlwedge I know about the two. I have a late 93 200tdi. Round about mid 94, the 300tdi was brought out. As far as I am aware, there is little difference suspension wise between the later 200tdi`s ( 200tdi vin no`s after JA032850 ) and the 300tdi.
Cosmetic differences include different grill and headlights, rear lights in the bumper, new dash ( which makes the heater/ cooling different) and centre console, and redesigned interior trim.
The 300tdi has a modified 200tdi engine that is a tad quieter and smoother and by all accounts a litttle more economical, and a different ( manual) gearbox that resists wear a little better.
Saying that, my neighbour has a P reg 300tdi and it sounds just like mine when it starts....noisy!

Hope this helps a little. I would imagine the early 300tdi will be a lot more expensive than a later 200tdi, but, as most people say, it isnt the year, its the condition that really denotes the price you pay. You may be better off getting a really good 200 instead of an average 300.

many thanks for the reply.. just what i was looking for...

i think the 300's are out of my price range but there seems to be some well looked after 200's for around the 2k mark...

just waiting to sell my other car then i'm good to go :)
