I've got a 200 tdi defender with an annoying rattle fromm the back of the transfer box. It seems to be a ring of metal that has worked lose on the TB where the prop attaches. Annybody know what this is?

Also I would like to get the gearbox and TB replaced as both are noisey and close to failing. What gearboxes and can I get away with. 200 and 300 TDi I assume any others?

Thanks

if you have a 200tdi then you want an LT77 gearbox. these are fitted to 200tdi and TD models. The 300tdi on have R380 gearboxes which hav totally different mounts etc.

I suppose on the fact that he repaires hundreds of the bloody things every year.

Maybe he meant that the Lt77 is a stronger box as obviously the R380 is a lot smoother/user friendly!

Is the Lt77 used in 200 TDi defenders and Discos?

The reason I ask is my 90 has had a tdi fitted but not sure of it's origin.

What's the easiest way to identify the box I have?

Not sure what you rattle is, but the Discovery flavours of LT77 to R380 are interchangable, Tdi for Tdi and V8 for V8.

Mounts are on the transfer boxes in both cases so if you are just swapping the box then no issue. Otherwise, the mounts, speedo sender and handbrake have to be swapped. The latter two are just a ring of bolts on the back of the transfer box that separates the two.

I have done gearbox swaps in Discoverys in both 'directions'; R380 out for LT77 and visa versa.

The 380 refers to the maximum torque capacity of the box, 380Nm. Both share the same 77mm main shaft spacing (this where the LT77 gets it's name). The R380 has a better main shaft bearing placement, but both suffer from weak syncros.
