My standard 90 CSW 300tdi with 265/75r16 tyres achieves about 26/28 mpg when just driving normally to and from work which is about 10 miles A/B roads no traffic, then 3 miles in a small town. When taking it steady it will almost scrape 30 if I take it steady.
 
Probably aerodynamics, but my 300 tdi disco returns, on average, low 30's rural driving and mid to high 30's on a run. I done away with the erg and cat and got a straight through exhaust. Plus, I drive slowly, lol. I don't thrash the bollocks out of it and hardly ever go above 60 mph on the motorways.
Fuel consumption is only an issue when comparing the two engines because I run my 300 on my home made bio diesel. I know the engine runs well on it, but I'm not sure a td5 would like it?
 
Well surely your logical first point of research before asking about anything is will the td5 work on home made bio then decide your car model from there?
 
Point taken, but if the td5 was more economical than the tdi, I might not have to keep making the bio. I retire next year, so won't be covering anywhere near the miles I do now.
 
I dont think a td5 will ever be more economical than a tdi 200 or 300 as they are pretty good of fuel, but the difference will be small so I would ignore tha tbit and get the best car you can for your money.
I have to say since Ive swapped jobs and now only do 10 miles per day as opposed to 35 miles it makes a serious difference to the cars running costs, I now fuel up once a month ish as opposed to roughly every 10 days or so.
 
I get 26 mpg out of my TD5 CSW in town driving.
The Defender is running a mild remap and EGR delete.
Getting the remap made no real difference to economy. Maybe 1-2mpg worse if l use the extra torque to change gear less.
