Have seen a discovery that has recently had the engine rebuilt but the Headgasket has now gone. The bloke wants about £450 but it has no tax or mot, does this sound about right?
Also how easy is it to do a headgasket, im not a novice with the spanners and dont mind getting my hands dirty but have never attempted a headgasket on anything bigger than a classic mini!

HG is simple enough. BUt for £450 The bodywork would have to be solid & I'd want to see receipts for all the engine parts that have allegedly been fitted.

I would say it's overpriced. £450 is what you should be paying for an MOT fail with a good engine in it. What has it failed the mot on? I would be offering £250 witha HG gone and no tax or test.

Its a car on ebay and the reserve is £450, its reasonably local but just a bit unsure as surely a HG wouldn't blow only 20000 miles after a rebuild would it?

I wouldn't call 20k 'a recent engine rebuild'. If the vehicle is overheated you can blow a headgasket quite easily. Sounds like one to steer clear of to me.

Doesn't say why the engine was rebuilt, apart from ebay where else should i be looking for a tdi 7 seater? had a look on here but there doesn#t seem to be many for sale, i have tried the local papers and the autotrader but nothing jumps out.
Might try and goto see this one and have a talk to the owner, the main reason i'm interested though is it is 1 owner from new and only 122000 miles

450 would be ok for one without t & t IF it had a good engine and not much else wrong As he's selling it for "spares or repair" and bearing in mind the engine is the most valuable bit, I'd say 200-250 quid would be about right. Having said that I just wouldn't buy it there are plenty out there.

If it's needing a second rebuild after just 120k I would say that the vehicle has not been looked after. You should expect 250k out of a well maintained tdi lump.

If the engine was overheated that could have caused the hg to blow. You dont know if damage was done to pistons and cylinders.Blocked rad is a common fault with old tdi's, ask me how I know ;) Sounds dodgy.

As has been said a tdi with that mileage should be in excellent condition. It shouldn't have been anywhere near needing major work.
