Thinking of selling my 1978 Series 3. Can't be without a Landy toy to compliment my D4. So I am thinking of looking for a nice Defender that I can just chuck chainsaws and the like in the back, also that will tow a trailer of log's with ease. Can anyone give me some advice? Not sure if I should look for a 300 Tdi or a Td5. Have been warned that the Td5's can have expensive problems with cylinder heads and computer chips. Another consideration is that I am not greatly mechanically minded, so can cope with very general maintenance but nothing to in depth and have no access to any diagnostic equipment anyway!!!

Any views?????

Would be worth going onto the defender section and reading some of the posts on there. Although there are 100's views on this which differ from person to person as to which is best.

In a nutshell:
300tdi = less electrics
Td5 = more refined

For what it's worth, my advice is buy a good one and don't worry which engine is in it. Concentrate on condition of chassis, bulkhead, bodywork etc.

If you already have a Disco4, Just buy the best 300tdi you can afford and use it as a workhorse.

The TD5s are briliant but you'll pay considerably more for a good one. Same things go wrong with both really. only difference is you can fix a 300tdi with a handfull of spanners and a hammer :D

6 of 1 and 1/2 a dozen of the other. No difference except a TD5 will cost a fair bit more to buy, in terms of maintenance pros and cons for both. As has been said, find the vehicle that you like TD5 or 300tdi, obviously one with a good clean chassis will influence your choice. I've got a TD5 but would be just as happy with a 300tdi. Good luck in your search :)

Thanks for all the advice guy's really useful. Had a quick punt around on the internet yesterday seems to be a bit of a lack of either that really stand out around my neck of the woods in trade. Some really nice looking ones up North though. Will start in earnest next week.

Most of them in the South have been stolen and stripped to parts or exported. :confused:
